Stardew Valley Board Game – Teach, Playthrough, & Review

Hi everyone my name is moani and i’m naveen from before you play and today we are covering the highly anticipated stardew valley board game this one comes to us from cole madeiros and concerned ape it’s a one to four player fully cooperative game based off of the video game stardew valley yes

So this is a video game that i’ve been really really into monique has been into this for a long time oh yeah it’s one of those kind of like lifestyle video games that doesn’t really end you know the whole premise of it is you’re building up this farm that you inherited from your

Grandfather who unfortunately passed away but you’re also helping grow the community you’re fighting against jojo mart which is like the the bad guy i guess of the video game and uh it’s it is very addicting the video game by the way is designed by eric barone and it was originally designed for

Pc i believe but uh within the past couple years it was ported over to the switch which is what i’ve been primarily playing on but i think some other consoles as well now as per usual we are going to start with a rules overview but we are going

To go into a deeper teach since this is such a new game and then of course we’re going to go into a full two-player play through and end with a review now if you’re interested in kind of jumping around the different sections we will include timestamps down below

But before we get started if you can all do us a big favor and turn on your klingon subtitles just in case we make any rules mistakes we can make those corrections there we’ll also add that to the description below and if you’d like to see more

And by the way welcome to stardew valley this is the entire map like if you play the video game you open up your map this is sardoo valley okay it is a nice little sleepy town full of nice people and up here in the upper left-hand corner is our farm that we’ve inherited

From our late grandfather for those of you who have never played the video game before this is the map the map is split up into different regions and so that’s what these paths kind of intersect into we have the mountains where we’re going to be buying buildings exploring the mine going lake

Fishing we have the forge where we’re going to visit the blacksmith the ranch where we’re going to be buying animals as well as our farm we’re going to be watering our crops and collecting animal products all in hopes of completing grandfather’s four goals as well as completing the community center which

Requires us to turn in a certain amount of goods and so like naveen was mentioning this game is a fully cooperative game meaning everybody works together for one common goal and if we lose we all lose together if we win we all win as a team and if you’ve never played the video

Game before just know that you don’t need to play the game in order to enjoy and understand this board game so everything that i just said will make sense in a second at the start of the game during setup you’re actually going to put out four of

These uh cards here which are grandpa’s goals the game comes with i believe eight of them and you’re always gonna play four in the full length game no matter how many players you’re playing with and so in our current game just to kind of give you an idea as to what you can

Expect we have stuff like reaching the bottom of the mine we also have expanding the farm which requires us to own buildings equal to the number of players which in our case is going to be two amongst other goals and we’ll go over all four of them before we start the

Game now over here we have the community center now if you’re not familiar with the video game in the story the community center is kind of a building that’s been kind of run down in order to invest in our community we are trying to rebuild certain rooms of the center and once all

Six rooms have been completed then the whole community center is built right and so this is a very similar concept we have the crafts room the pantry fish tank etc and so the way that this works is the game actually comes with several cards per room

Each type of room is going to require a specific type of good so for example the fish tank will require certain types of fish for you to donate the crafts room is usually some kind of forgeable the vault requires money etc and so as a group you’re only required to complete one card

Per room so for example our crafts room goal is to have any two construction materials for the craft room then in a two-player game we would be required to contribute any four materials because it’s two materials per player but the thing about it is all of these bundles start the game face down

In order for us to contribute to these bundles we must first reveal them but that is the basic concept of what we’re going to be doing in this game if we were able to complete all four of grandpa’s goals as well as contribute all of the goods necessary for the community center

Before the end of four seasons then we win the game so like we’re mentioning the game is played over one year aka four seasons and this is the season deck we start the game in spring and so that is what this uh pink flower represents

And so at the start of each round we’re going to first draw the topmost season card from the season deck and so you’re going to have four cards per season once you go through all four cards aka four rounds then the season will end and you will progress

Onto the next season which is summer so starting with spring you’re going to pull the first card from the season deck and on these cards shows a sequence of symbols from top to bottom that you have to resolve in that order and we’re going to explain each of these

Symbols as we play the game because over the course of the game we’re going to run into every single one of them we’ll see it and it’s just too much information to throw at you at once each player has their own player board we choose our player board before you

Start the game and it’s going to allow you to dictate what kind of professional upgrades that you get and so for example i am going to be starting as the foraging profession which is going to let me do better things whenever i have to forage on the map

Naveen is starting as the mining profession yeah so going to the mine will be just a little bit more lucrative for me in the future we each also have a starting tool that we’ve decided upon my starting tool is the watering can and the watering can will eventually allow me to water crops

Better than i can currently but they do require me to upgrade them using ore which we find from the mines naveen is starting with the pickaxe starting tool and it’s going to help him do things better in the minds once we’ve completely resolved our season card then we’re going to go into

The planning phase this is where everybody around the table can discuss and talk about what you’re going to be doing during the day this is where players can also trade items and so if i have an item that i need naveen to go take in order to buy a

Building i can do this during this time exactly once we’ve decided what everybody wants to do during the round then you take your pawn and so i’m going to be playing as a green pawn today and you place your pawn in the action spot where you’re going to take your actions

And so all of these action spots are basically where all the the lines meet so this is the mountain the mountain has three different types of actions you can take there this is a forge uh the town etc and so i’m potentially going to be doing a lot of foraging and planting

During the game because of my profession so maybe i want to start here in order to buy some seeds from pierre’s general store and naveen yeah let’s just say i want to go to the mines then at that point all players would take their actions starting with the person who has the

First player token which is me right now and so the way the turn structure works is players get to take two actions you can either take two actions back to back using the same spot that you’re in or you can take one action move to a new location

Following a path and then take your second action so say i’m here in the town center and i want to buy seeds and then i want to water crops so what i could do is i could take my first action by visiting pierre’s general store here buy seeds then move

Over to the farm following this pathway and then water my crops i will say though that the main upside of moving on your turn is that anytime you move across a path you are allowed to take one of the tiles in one of the sections that are adjacent to that pathway

So in this example i would be able to take either this tile this tile or this tile and so all the tiles that have the tree symbol on it are going to give you wood the other tiles that don’t have a tree symbol on it are potentially

Forageable items and so you might find stuff like this leak and so forthable items are represented by that kind of mushroom symbol at the top left-hand corner these items can be given to villagers they can also be sold for money if i were to sell this i could sell it

For two coins before we continue we just want to mention that all money in this game is community money so it’s not like monique has her own and i have my own we all have the same money we have a shared bank we’re also going to be earning hearts by friending

Villagers in the future and hearts are also a communal pot and so i’m just going to briefly go over all the different types of actions that you can take before we get started with our playthrough let’s start up here in the mountains so this big action spot here actually is

Encompasses three different types of actions that you can take you can visit robin in order to buy buildings you can explore the mine and you can go fishing so let’s start with exploring the mine these two decks of cards represent the mine the mine is consistent of 12 different

Levels and so you start on level one the second deck over here shows you all the different types of things that you can get on this level and so these are going to be completely random and so if i were to take the action that allows me to explore the mine what i

Would do is i would take two out of these three stardew dice by the way since we haven’t discussed these yet these are the stardew dice they show three different symbols on them there’s a junomo there’s a heart and there is a star drop flower and we’re going to be using these dice

For uh several of the different actions that you can take on the board when you explore the mine you’re going to take two stardew dice and you’re going to roll them now depending on what symbols show so for example i rolled a star drop as well as

A heart and then i would consult the current level of the mine and i would look for where those two symbols intersect so in this example the star drop and the heart will intersect at either the staircase or this symbol down here and depending on whatever the symbol is you go ahead

And resolve it anytime you see these symbols these are considered mine events and so that would allow you to draw one of the mine events from the deck and resolve the event whatever it says this symbol allows you to take an ore depending on which ores are

Available for the level of the mind so in level one you can only get copper ore and as you go deeper down the mine and increase the level of the mine those ores get even better and better these symbols allow you to get an item from the item deck

And anytime you see a staircase symbol this allows you to go one level down in the mine so staircases are the main way to progress down the mine our end game goal is to explore the entire mine so we need to go down all the way to level 12

As one of our grandpa missions you can also turn in stone in order to progress down the mind but we’ll talk about that later so those aren’t all the symbols that you’ll see on the mind but the rest of them will kind of discuss as we play the game

The next type of action is buying buildings from robin and so the game comes with several uh different buildings you always play with both the coupe and the barn in order for you to purchase animals and out of the rest of the buildings you choose two of them to use in your

Games you always have a choice of four and so building tiles look like this the cost to build them is at the bottom here so the coop requires 10 coins as well as two wood and once you purchase the coop then now you have access to purchasing animals and getting animal

Products from them the next type of action is fishing now there are three different spots where you can go fishing you can do lake fishing over here river fishing as well as ocean fishing here at the beach regardless of which area you go to all fishing is done by way of this fish

Track the fish truck holds up to five different uh fish and each fish is color coordinated depending on what area you’re going fishing in they’re also represented by a shape at the top left-hand corner that represents this spot so for example this is a river fish because it has that blue

Triangle now all these fish tiles follow the same anatomy at the bottom left-hand corner shows the symbols that you need to roll on the stardew dice in order to catch this fish at the bottom right hand corner shows its cell value similar to the mine anytime

You go fishing from any of these areas you’re going to roll three of these stardew valley dice this time so say for example i’m gonna go fishing uh at the lake and so i’m gonna roll all three now the only fish that was um eligible to be caught at the lake was

This uh this anglerfish over here and in order for me to catch it it would require me to roll a star drop which i did i rolled it this is also a legendary fish by the way as shown by the crown some bundles and some grandpa goals will

Require you to catch legendary fish so that’s why that’s significant and they’re worth a lot more money that’s true and so anytime i catch fish they’re going to go into my inventory on my player board right there there are other things that you’ll see on this fishing track that is

A general gist of how that spot works sometimes you’ll see trash that’s not worth anything and so if ever you go fishing and there’s trash in this fishing track and you were not able to catch any fish then you can get a consolation trash out of the fishing track

Uh in order to just clear up space for more fish the last thing that you’ll see are these types of fish that require you to have bug meat in order to catch them and so these fish are not rollable meaning you cannot roll the dice to catch them

But if you ever have bug meat in your inventory from either getting it from the mines or any other way then at the start of your fishing action you can turn in bug meat in order to claim these fish the next area is the forge and the forge is where you can donate

To the museum as well as open geodes over the course of the game you’re going to be acquiring geodes from the mine potentially and geodes are kind of like little tiny treasure chests uh you need the blacksmith to open it and once it you open the geode then it gets you some

Kind of item some sort of reward it’s not a reward not an item actually and so in order to take this action you need to have a geode in your possession and they look something like this if you decide to open a geode what you do is

You roll one of these stardew valley dice and depending on what kind of geode it is if it’s a basic one as shown by this chart over here then you just look at what symbol you rolled and that is the benefit that you get so in this example

I rolled this green dunamo so i get a copper ore the next type of space is donating to the museum the museum is down here and there are two different types of things that you can donate to the museum you can donate both artifacts as well as minerals

As over the course of the game you might acquire uh these types of items either by by foraging say if naveen were to go through this path and ready to pick up this item oh there you go and uh if you were to kind of pull the the three worm symbol

It’ll show a gear at the bottom right hand corner or it’ll show like a mineral symbol and if any time you see that gear then you pull a tile from the artifact mineral bag and you get to keep it these are double-sided so one side shows the artifact

The other side shows the mineral and it also shows a letter because that is the spot where you are required to donate to on the actual museum so if i claim this artifact the hand axe on b and i were to go to the museum i can

Donate it and put it in that b slot once that slot is full you cannot donate anything else to it so you’re looking for unique letters yes and the significance of this is there are some goals that require you to donate to the museum like uh in our current game actually our

Goal is to fill the museum slots equal to two times the number of players so we need to fill four slots by before the end of the game if you complete an entire column then you gain an epic item which is just a really sweet item that’ll really help

You do things in the game and uh same goes for the mineral column the next area is the ranch this is where you can buy animals from marnie you can only buy animals once you’ve built the appropriate type of building so once i build the coop

Then that’ll open up and now i can purchase one of these three animals the coop allows you to purchase these three types of animals we have the duck the chicken and the rabbit and the price of the animals at the bottom left-hand corner the type of animal product it produces at the bottom

Right hand corner so rabbit’s foot egg or duck feather and if you have the barn then going to that spot allows you to purchase barn animals which are going to be like cows goats and sheep so the next section we’re going to discuss is the town which is kind of

Like the meat and potatoes of the game the first thing that you can do here is you can visit gus at his saloon in order to make a friend and so this is something that you want to do early this is a very important part of the game because this is how you

Gain hearts and hearts are one of the type of currency in the game taking that action allows me to draw the top most card of the villagers deck and the villagers cards look like this at the top left hand corner tells you their favorite kind of item that you can

Give them and at the top right hand corner tells you what they don’t like so in abigail’s case she does not like crops or artifacts but she likes animal products literally any other kind of item that are not these things is just kind of like a neutral like and

So in order to friend a villager you have to discard an item from your inventory that they don’t at least dislike in doing so you get one heart in return if i were to discard an item that she really loves then it’ll get me an additional heart

If her birthday is the current season that we’re in which in her case is fall and we’re still technically in spring then i would get an additional heart so i can get a maximum number of three hearts per villager that i friend now unfortunately if i don’t have an

Item that i can gift them then they just get discarded and i don’t make a friend but hopefully you are able to make a friend and get some hearts and so the significance of that is for the next action which is going to the community center so going here

Is what allows us to reveal and complete these bundles in order to reveal the card you have to discard a number of hearts equal to the number of players so in our case if i were to discard two hearts i can flip over the leftmost card because you must

Flip them from left to right and you’re able to do as many of these actions in one go so if we had six hearts we could have revealed one two and three in addition i can reveal and contribute to the bundles all in one action so if i also had these materials

I can turn them in to these bundles once i complete one bundle then i gain an item and just like i was talking about earlier items are just awesome rewards that are helpful once you restore the last room and the the community center is complete then you gain an

Epic item which is just a really so much more awesome version of their regular items and the last action you can take in the town is you can visit pierre’s general store to buy seeds and sell things and so the way that buying seeds work in

Order to plant crops in your farm is actually really simple all the crops follow the same kind of anatomy at the bottom left-hand corner is like its watering value and the bottom right hand corner is how much it sells for on the opposite side you may have an

Opportunity to turn a crop into a quality crop and so that’s why these are just worth one coin more than the standard version each crop that you purchase costs one coin each so if i were to buy both of these i would just pay two coins from my supply

And then you would put them in your crop track over here depending on the watering value so my potato had a watering value of three so i’ll put on that three spot and my strawberry had a value of four so i’ll put it on that four spot

Only one crop can exist per space unless you have a specific action that allows you to stack them and that’s all there is to buying seeds now the last action spot is the farm and so the farm allows us to water these crops as well as collecting from our animals

If i were to water the crops all it allows me to do is it allows me to move all of these crop tiles one space to the right if i had say an upgraded watering can then i can do more spaces than that but at the start of the game it’s only gonna

Be one space per action as soon as a crop leaves this track that player gets to take this crop into their inventory in order to gift them to villagers or sell them whatever they need to do you may notice that there’s this kind of like crow track up here

Uh this has to do with a symbol that we’ll see on the season cards that requires us to remove crops depending on which crow shows up so that’s going to be more during the play through and the very last action before we get started is collecting from the animals

So in order to take this action you have to have animals obviously and you also have to have the coop or the barn the game comes with these three animal dice that you will be required to roll in order to see what kind of animal products you

Get so so say i had purchased a chicken right i would roll all three of these dice and if i see any chickens show up which actually did not happen then i would get eggs yes depending on the number of them number of symbols that showed up on my dice

So sometimes you can get unlucky but that is the basic gist of how collecting from animals works and those are all the action spots that is essentially how the entire game works once we run out of the entire season deck then the game will end

You know if we’ve met all of our goals by then then we win if not then we lose i also do want to mention there are solo rules so if you want to play the solo you can there are also a lot of different variations depending on what kind of

Game you want to play so we’re playing with the standard deck of season cards the game comes with a ton of these big stacks so you can customize what kind of a year you’re going to have essentially you can also play a shorter version of the game and so all of those

Modes are are laid out in the rulebook so we’re going to clean up just a little bit reset the board and then we’re going to get started okay so we’ve reset the board shuffled everything around and we’re ready to play so we just have to figure out who goes first and ready yep

Me all right that’s okay so i have the dog token this is dexter dexter’s our wiener dog um and so we are going to start by just telling you what our goals are just in case you did not stay for the teach we also want to mention for those

Who did watch it that we didn’t discuss how marriage works just know that you are allowed to get married in the game you have to find the mermaid pendant it’s an epic item but getting married gets you this spouse token that essentially gives you an additional

Action on your turn we’ll see if that even happens yeah right uh-huh okay so our goals for this game are going to be expanding the farm we have to own buildings equal to the number of players so we have to purchase two of them two of those four

Exploring the mines so it gets to the bottom of this deck which is challenging 12. we’re going to restore the museum so we have to fill museum slots uh equal to two times the number of players so it’s any four of these slots here and we have to make friends equal to

Three times the number of players so in our case we need to make six friends okay so six friends four museum tiles all 12 of the levels of the mine and we have to buy two buildings yes in addition to completing our uh our facebook community centers yeah bundles so

So you’re first and first i am the i have the foraging profession by the way and i have the the watering can as my starting tool yeah and i believe naveen is a pickaxe with the mining production we also start with three coins okay so first things first we have our season

Cards yes so i’m gonna go ahead and flip the first one we are in spring week one wow this uh this card has a lot of symbols okay quite a few things so the first thing that happens is we’re going to turn our crop to quality yes so we start with one

Parsnip that parsnip is now a little bit more valuable it becomes a three then we get to water our crops once so the watering means we slide it down in the conveyor belt like that wonderful next we are going to pass the first player token which means i don’t actually get to

Start as first player naveen is going to be the true first player of the game now whenever we see this symbol we discard the rightmost two fish from the fish stack okay one two they go out this all slides down and then we just refill from the fish bag

Yes and i know it might seem strange that we’re doing all this before the game actually begins but these cards are randomized in the deck so you don’t really know what’s going to happen exactly oh we found some trash that’s not good oh great and then we have a snail which requires

Bug meat perfect and lastly if we have any items that we want to sell we can do it at this point so now that it’s all done we’re not going to sell anything because we just started the game now we go into our planning where exactly we’re going to go okay so

We need friends we need to make friends we need to gain hearts i think that’s a priority right to start the game totally so we also need to gain some money so i think buying seeds and watering our crops should be a priority a priority as well as

Making friends and exploring the mine now there is this angler here this uh this legendary fish that i don’t want that fish to get away that’s the one that i don’t want to let get away so we don’t have to get it right now but

In the future i want a gun for it okay that is lake fishing that’s lake fishing so maybe i’ll buy seeds and then water the crops sure yeah all right so then i’m going to start the game here in the town where you want to go okay so i think i’m going to

Explore the mine because i would really like your watering can to be upgraded um on these die here hearts are the more probable to roll there’s a three out of six chance of rolling those so i’m definitely going to want to go here because where hearts and hearts intersect

Gets us the ore that we need which i would like to give to you hopefully in the future yeah i would rather you upgrade yours i would well we’ll see maybe i can do it yeah okay so now we go into actions naveen you are the first player

Okay so i’m going to explore the mine so i get to roll two of these die and then wherever it intersects that’s what i get wish us some luck oh heart and so you can either do a mine event or you can go down a level wow do you

Want me to just progress now i mean it is one of our goals yes okay let’s just let’s just go down the stairs all right we’re going so we discard that card and we’re now in level two so one twelfth done this has some more options anyway yeah okay so you’ve

Explored the mind once no naveen has the option of moving down a path to take another action elsewhere yes or you can stay where you are i i might just explore the mine again because we technically never we got down the stairs but i didn’t anticipate going

Down the stairs there so all right i think i want to get some stone or something else so let’s roll these two heart heart and star drop okay so nothing or an item oh and i don’t think let’s go with an item definitely an item so naveen pulled the catalog this says

For every wood you discard you gain one item interesting yeah so in the game the catalog is like something where you can shop for furniture for your uh your house but i guess with that anytime you have wood if you don’t want to use it to

Build a building you can discard it to get an item so it’s like a late game thing yeah read the word right now we’ll hang on to it for right now all right so uh we didn’t discuss this during the teach but you end your turn by going back to the farm

And there are these four different options for end of turn effects you can build stairs by turning in stone you can pet your animals to increase the quality of their products remove a joja tile which we didn’t discuss either which is bad and you can upgrade your starting tool i

Can’t do any of it uh because i don’t have the materials to do any of it we have no pets there’s no jojo so let’s end it yep all right that’s me so it’s gonna go back to me and uh i am going to visit pierre to buy seeds

Do you wanna just buy three let’s just load it up all right you wanna do two three four yes we’re going to buy seeds for spring the two three and four positions are parsnip a potato and strawberry and a strawberry and this this whole thing here on the left

This is just basically a catalog of all the different types of items uh easily accessible for us okay and now i’m going to make my way over to the farm to water my crops so in doing that i can take one of these what should i take this one uh yeah

So that way when you go back this way your only options just would okay ooh nice awesome so i pulled a forgeable item this is a leak it’s a quality leak so it gives me a little bit more money a little bit more bang for my buck

Okay so this goes into my storage area and now i’m going to water the crops so i get to move everything over by one which gives me a parsnip look at me another quality crop right there yeah it’s going to go into my my inventory solid so that’s it so you

Come home and my turn i’m not going to do any of the end of turn effects that is the end of our first round technically right so we’re going to move on to the next a week essentially of our season and now we’re only doing two things so

The first thing is that star just like earlier we can turn a crop to quality yeah might as well do the parsnip sure it’s the one that’s coming coming off next okay and then we can sell stuff do you want me to sell any of the things

That i acquired you know what we could use them to make friends uh hopefully they want one of those two things yeah uh right now we have stuff stocked then listen just not for now maybe not yeah okay so planning phase where do you want to go

Um let’s see should i go back to the mine yes okay i’m gonna go back to the mine and then maybe after the mine i will go and water crop so i can get some stuff going okay i think that i should definitely make a friend but do i want to go ocean

Fishing do we have any ocean fish oh there’s only this one right here um you could maybe lake fish lake fish and then come down here and to make a friend sure so i can try to get that angler so you can try to get it yeah okay

So uh i’ll start here then okay all right with you so i go first okay so let’s go ahead and explore that mind one more time so i’m looking for really not heart heart is what we’re looking for don’t stone his nose would be nice yes green that’s two stone fantastic all

Right so i get to pick up two stone and this will be good for when i go back here and i’ll explain it then but i have two stone now that’s awesome stone is also not giftable so you can’t make friends because who wants who will fall in love

With you if you give them a stone anytime you see that red guess that’s not true yeah it depends on the type of stone right yeah okay all right so where are you going to go next all right so i think i’m going to go water the crops like i

Said so i’m going to go across water the crops and i get to pick up one of these two i’ll take the one on the high side just to leave this open for you possibly thank you and oh another stone okay i’m the stone builder all right and then while i’m

Here i’m gonna water the crops i will take this parsnip and the potato and strawberry can slide on down so now we got some stuff awesome okay so that’s the end of my second action i go back here so we have build stairs and the way you can build stairs

Is you turn in one stone per player so i can build uh one set right now i’m gonna go ahead and you can do that any number of times at the end of your turn so i’m going to turn these two stone in so let’s go ahead and turn it back in

One i’ll turn this down in here too okay just to make my life easier and that lets us go further down the mine nice hey look at that we’re at level three level three oh my gosh we’ve got grub and bugs this is a good looking card it is there’s no skull

Symbol if ever there’s a skull symbol and you roll it then you do what it says up here although this is actually not bad gain one bug meat usually it’s something nasty yeah later on it gets kind of nasty cool i like that yeah okay so uh it’s

Your turn so did you want to do the mine or do you want to expose it why aren’t you gonna go fishing it’s not bad the mine is pretty good let’s go to the line let’s go to the mine yeah i think that’s still you have to explore the

Yeah i think that angler is kind of safe all right ready yeah good luck great green ooh two geodes awesome okay so the type of geodes in level three are is the standard kind so just get two of those okay from the supply and then maybe eventually i will go to clint

To open those geodes up so here are your two geodes oh you can get them i can gift them yeah because geodes are giftable items there’s a specific clint i think is the one who really likes geos that’s right so speaking of making a friend let’s go do that i’m moving down

This way and i should take this or this probably this one because we’re going to be watering crops okay fine i’ll take this one so this is uh it’s another leak just like our earlier leak nice items here all right so i’m going to make a friend

Because this is our second full game play yeah uh we played a half game kind of via zoom facetime deal with it with four players but it was quite long so this is the second time that we’ve completely finished it yep this is interesting you know like you

Were mentioning in the beginning we didn’t know that this game was coming out and so if you’re just joining us maybe you skipped the teach and you skipped the play through and i just want to hear how how the game is this game was on sale it completely sold

Out but they i believe are going to go for an another print run second run yet we also understand that maybe not everybody coming to watch this review are hobby board gamers and so our channel is primarily a hobby board game channel yes so we’re used to playing games that are

Very involved or like even heavier than this sometimes thick rule sets yes yeah lots of different chords yeah so we’re gonna try to describe how we feel about it within the context of all sorts of all sorts of experience uh coming to watch this review right yep

So starting with theme theme is always how we like to start our reviews sure i i am a big fan of the video game yes and you’ve been playing for years i mean yes every iteration of it you’ve played it right yes that’s that’s gotta be one of

My favorite kinds of video games kind of like a sandboxy you kind of create your own game plan every morning kind of thing and naveen has never played this i’ve never played it i’ve heard you playing it i’ve heard you play with your fan with your family also so

We’re going to talk about the game in terms of somebody who knows vip and someone who doesn’t funny with theme let’s start with you actually me okay yeah it’s uh it’s adorable that’s for sure um what you’re doing here is is interesting so i for me because it’s an ip it’s hard to

Like really attach myself and know exactly what is going on with certain aspects of it it’s nice to play with somebody like yourself who does know the ip so that when you see like oh the you know the iridium ore like you know that’s something that you’re familiar with so it’s nice

It brings me joy to hear that you’re excited about these kind of things but um in terms of the overall theme i you know it it’s very it’s a thematic game in the sense that you are you know you’re growing your crops so that you can

Sell the only thing that is kind of interesting is you basically bribe your friends is that i don’t know how close to like you know real life theme there is there but other than that everything else is pretty fairly thematic right yeah uh so for me i i

Really love stardew valley and i think that they did a fantastic job porting specifically the theme i won’t talk about the mechanics and kind of how that flows in terms of the board game but importing the theme over to this board game i am thoroughly impressed they got the community center they did

Grandpa’s goals is kind of not in the video game okay grandpa is in the video game but not his goals okay definitely the community center is is a huge part of especially that first year in completing um the first year of the game okay the way that they integrated just the map

Itself on the board and creating the kind of the worker action spots that you can go to i thought that that was really really interesting so this map that we have here this is very similar to what you see in the game you open up the map in

The video game and this is it okay yeah so like right when you see the board you’re like oh yeah that’s stardew valley it’s fantastic the components by the way are really really nice all of the tiles are such good quality the cards are good quality these dice are adorable

Yeah so they did a really really good job with the components and just kind of leak the aesthetics of this game now speaking in terms of player count and replayability so we’ve technically played this game at four yes because we were able to introductory kind of see what the game

Is like with our friends because this is not our copy of the game right we borrowed this from our friends so thank you you’re watching this thank you so much for learning to us but uh when we did like a half game with them that was a four player game and

Then we played this three times technically at two yes so what are your thoughts okay so uh for player count okay i like co-op games so i like the idea of four people coming around the table and playing this game but man it can be very long it is

Extremely long really long like four players and the game knows this like the people who develop the game they put it in the rule book that it is 40 minutes per player yeah it’s like 40 45 minutes per player and that’s about right four player game

That is everything that we just did it’s basically double so anytime you have to unlock uh one of the bundles it’s four hearts instead of two right anytime you have to contribute instead of two um uh what are those called uh forgivable goods yeah yeah for the

Business now four so everything is just extra you know that’s how they basically did it so um man it’s pretty long at four so i don’t know i don’t know if i’d ever want to play it f4 yeah i don’t know i was gonna say like maybe four people but two

Player just to make it faster and you’re kind of talking but then people get bored it’s it’s like it’s a little bit too long for us at four at two it’s kind of a sweet spot to yeah in terms of length yeah the rule book does say that you can

Cut down that time by scaling everything so you can do half the amount of cards per season half of the amount of goals you do three uh bundles chosen randomly for the community center we tried that and that was the first time we played it too yeah and it

Didn’t work for us no yeah playing the half game is it was like seasons just go so fast that yeah it was just like i can’t believe we’re in summer already we didn’t do anything and then there’s just so much luck in this game that you could spend two actions doing

Absolutely nothing blanking out yeah especially if you go to the mine and just blank blank yeah and then you get halfway through the game and you’re like we’re clearly not going to win so that’s why we said we’ve played this three times because the first time we

Played it by ourselves it was the half game and it just wasn’t gonna work out there so yeah i don’t know if i would necessarily recommend doing that kind of scaling it down also because your action selections on the board require you to be geographically in certain positions and so

If i choose to go to the mine i’m definitely not going ocean fishing yeah just because of the way that the classes are laid out so that that’s another reason why i feel like that game didn’t work out for us yeah because you need more opportunity to take more actions all

Over the board if it’s just like okay well we we need to get the summer fruit out there and uh well there’s only two times in summer so they’re gone so what are you gonna do so maybe the three player game might be a sweet spot if you’re okay with playing

A two hour game um in terms of replayability there is quite a bit of variability in this game which i think is really cool could be overwhelming especially if people are playing it who are not hobby gamers and who just really like stardew valley and really just want to get into this game

The game is already semi-complicated as it is but now you have all these options yeah there’s extra buildings there’s a ton of villages a bunch of items there’s a ton of villagers the the game comes i don’t even know how many buildings are total and you only

Ever play with four of them for any any given game the bundles themselves for each room there’s anywhere from like three to four or three to five cards per type of bundle and you’re only going to satisfy one card per game there is a mechanic that we

Didn’t discuss during our game play or teach that allows you to uh choose a new card for the bundle by spending more hearts if you got a card that you couldn’t fulfill that costs a lot of action to gain the hearts to go there to the community center right

So that’s tough but the thing that i think is really cool is the season deck yes we played with the standard deck there there’s a symbol on these cards that dictate which ones are the standard and so for your first game you definitely want to play with this deck

But the game comes with a huge stack of additional season cards and in that stack are things like festivals which are very specific to the game um and just like other combinations of the symbols on on the season cards so you can dictate what type of game you’re going to be playing right

You can pre-choose which season cards to include and then and then shuffle them up so you don’t know what order they’re going to come out in right but i thought that was really cool because that helps kind of cater what kind of gameplay experience you’re gonna have

Like if you don’t want those jojo titles in there then you know take those out you know right this also plays solo any co-op game really plays solo but for especially right now during the pandemic where solo gaming has become a little bit more of a priority i think

That that is a great option lots of variability with which leads to a ton of replayability you can keep on bringing this game out and having a different experience every single time the next thing is weight that is a topic that i struggle with a little bit

In this game so sorry wait if if you’re not a hobby board gamer is basically how mind taxing is a game how complicated how complicated and convoluted so if we’re if we’re talking in terms of a light game you’re thinking like sorry sorry or trouble trouble because you roll

Your dice you move it’s not that complicated it’s not hard to play it right really really really complicated games are sometimes can take you hours and have like a whole novel of a book for its rule book yes there’s a ton of rules so that would be really complex so what

Are what do you think in terms of weight you know what this is actually once you know how to play it something not that bad but to teach it to somebody it’s quite a bit you know just our teach alone was probably quite some time just to get into

A game like this so yeah we didn’t even we didn’t even teach everything i realized afterwards we didn’t talk about the season deck we didn’t talk about we missed like little rules here and there and so yeah yeah this one is actually it’s a it’s a it is a pretty complicated game

It’s it actually surprised me i didn’t think it was going to be like that knowing that there was going to be a stardew game that was going to be uh for people who you know basically are interested in the ip who probably not all are board gamers so

Um but i’m glad they challenged it and they and they put out a difficult tough game because this actually does make you think very very much yeah and it makes you work together a lot that yeah i’m kind of i i know exactly what you mean i’m both surprised

And kind of confused about it because when you’re thinking about an ip that is that popular that that will draw in so many people who are not hobby board gamers you i would i was expecting this game to almost be like a rolling move yeah right or just just something that

Is not going to be this demanding i guess just because it’s not just the rule set but it’s also um the strategy like how how to win this is a hard game it’s a really hard game to win yeah i also have some issues with it that also doesn’t necessarily

Make it a proper target for hobby board gamers who are not a fan of the ip so because of that i struggle with thinking who the true target audience of this board game is i think that if you are not a hobby board gamer and you’ve stumbled upon this game because

You like the ip and you like it i would invite you to explore more hot board games because that is something that i think would be really good that this could potentially draw in more hobby board gamers because i will let you know right now there is a whole

World of board gaming out there for you to explore so if you like this please explore more like naveen was mentioning it definitely has a lot of depth to it it does yeah and so i am pleasantly surprised because i think that that is really cool

That they kind of deep dove they went for it for a game like this but uh also a little bit concerned i guess so with that let’s talk about mechanics and so for those who don’t know mechanics are basically the nitty-gritty like the pieces of the game that the things

That you have to do in a game to get it done yes um so i i actually like the mechanics of this game they’re actually very interesting yeah i think a majority of it is actually a really i was really impressed i will say we play a lot of board games

And i was really impressed by the way that they integrated the theme and mechanics together yeah so it’s basically a uh action selection game uh and that basically means you’re picking which actions you want to take um it’s like action selection and also pick up and deliver

And like pick up and deliver means you go to one place to pick up stuff to go to another place and drop it off yep so it’s it’s like a mix of those things yeah and i really love that they use the map as the primary method of

Selecting actions that makes total sense because that’s what you’re doing in the game most of the time right you’re holding down the d-pad and trying to get to wherever you need to go and do stuff yeah i mean starting from the beginning of the round right your season cards season cards are like

The calendar you know you consult your calendar when you’re in the video game then you go into the planning phase and the planning phase really does feel like for all of you out there who play the video game and you end your day right you go to bed

And now you’re in that screen where you’re about to start the next day and you’re thinking okay what are all the things i need to do tomorrow i need to go build a building i need to buy i need to buy more animals for my barn so i just thought that

That planning phase that you do in the game it really feels like that okay because you’re talking to players around the table and you’re like okay what do we need to get done tomorrow because spring is about to end and you need to pick up these things right

So i thought that that was really cool the way that you you plant crops and you water them that is so clever okay because they incorporated the crows and that is definitely a risk in the video game unless you build scarecrows you’re at risk of some of your crops

Going away the one thing that’s not thematic is that when you change seasons typically the crops will wither out and die i think that if they did that in this video game you would nobody would win ever the board game yeah sorry in this board game nobody would

Win there is a ton of rolling dice in this game that brings me to my next point which is kind of a gripe which is the fact that there is a significant amount of luck a lot of luck in this game a lot of luck

You can be in a three and a half hour game at four players and lose because of luck yeah which is kind of tough that’s kind of rough that’s a rough reality to give you an example naveen and i played a two-player game where our grandpa goal required you to have

Legendary fish two legendary fish because there’s two players two player game all you needed was two legendary fish there are four legendary fish in the entire bag and the entire game we did not pull one yeah so we failed because uh it never showed up so i don’t know

So that’s kind of rough if you go through the entire game yeah and you lose just because it was never going to happen right now so the way that they did the mine was cool it also does require a lot of luck which i don’t necessarily agree with for certain aspects it does

Kind of remove a lot of the monster slaying and that is a significant part of the video game you can’t port everything right sure so i think that that’s fine but going down the mine is really really tough yeah and especially in a four-player game like

You need four stone just to build the stairs yeah it’s like uh and we struggled getting two stones yeah to build the stairs everything else is sort of okay i know that there’s a lot of talk about the villagers and how you make friends and people are

Kind of frustrated about that i actually don’t find that that frustrating no just kind of diversify what you have yeah because the mechanic is you pull a villager card and you’re kind of stuck with that one villager if you only have items that they hate then that’s you just have to

Describe the builder you don’t make a friend but so i think in general that that just kind of encourages you to diversify the items that you have in your inventory before trying to find a friend yeah exactly the one thing that i have the biggest gripe

Is the way that fishing works fishing oh my gosh fishing can be very painful and the reason why is because there’s only one fish track to represent all three locations lake fishing river and ocean right you’re not only going to have fish on that track you’re going to have garbage

And you’re going to have chests you’re also going to have fish that you can’t roll for right you can you can only uh turn in bug meat for those types of fish and so when we played one of our two player games we literally had a moment where we had three chests and

Two garbage right so yeah we didn’t even have any fish in our fish tracks yeah there’s no mechanic to let you flush the fish track yes there should be a rule that’s like okay only one garbage in the in the track at one time or you know only one chest at one time

The chest goes above the track yeah instead of the chest having a uh you know a sideways arrow it should be above the top and then it doesn’t clog exactly because you’re you have three areas that are dipping into that one track yeah the other thing is the bug meat fish i

Really don’t believe in them it’s so hard to get bug meat yeah i think we on those cards do we only see it like twice on those map cards in the you get them from the mine yeah and we only saw it twice and like you have to

Roll it just right to get the bug meat so what i think should have been done and don’t don’t take this as if we’re trying to change the game this is just what we we naturally kind of go through this is our process uh when we

When we play games i think that the bug meat fish should be allowed to be rollable like if you have the bug meat then alternatively before you roll for fish you can take them but if you don’t have bug meat then you can still roll for them or make it

Easier to get bug meat use it as like one of your end up turn effects or just kind of like another kind of optional action that you can do for free on your turn by turning in all these things i think it should be if you go to your end of

Turn effects and you don’t do any one of the other four you get one bug me or if you fail at the mine your consolation is one bug meeting to fly a monster yeah or just slay a monster you get a bike something like that something like that

So that is my biggest gripe is the fishing that is in addition to the absurd amount of luck that is required to win the game i mean you can play the game for the experience and have a great time because it actually is really fun yeah we enjoyed it yeah i mean

All the negatives that we’re discussing is very very specific but uh the feel of the game we have a really good time playing it even if we lose there are certain things that maybe we would have preferred to be seen to kind of decrease the amount of luck required

And that’s things like making the bundles be face up yeah yeah yeah i don’t know why the the bundles have to all be faced down and then you have to turn in two hearts just to reveal it i feel like all six should be face up but you still

Have to turn in too hard to just have the opportunity to score it you know what i’m saying so like you still know because the very end if it takes you forever just to find out oh we needed minerals this whole time i i sold those minerals that we had

Earlier it would be nice to just be like okay i have this mineral technically we need to make money but i’m not going to sell it because i know at the very end i need i need to use it so i’m going to hang on to it yeah and it’s really tempting

It’s sorry it’s really tempting to say well then just get all your hearts early and open all the bundles but if you’re playing a four-player game that is 24 hearts that’s what you’re looking for and you’re the main way to get hearts or by befriending villagers you’re gonna get between one and three

Hearts maybe three hearts is like like real prime right and then kind of the last bit i wanted to say is i think that they could have what could have been cool is if they integrated the the morning luck you know when you wake up in the morning if you play the video

Game you go to your tv and you kind of see what the luck is that could help some of the the luck in the game yeah if you have an established maybe part of the season deck where it’s like okay well today you’re gonna have a little bit extra

Luck so when you go to the mines instead of rolling two die you roll three yeah something like that right i think that that would have been a cool change as well and the last last thing i want to mention if you’re going to play this game

I honestly think that they should have made this make friends grandpa goal a mandatory goal like that’s the one that’s just printed on the board just print it on the board embed it because you’re gonna do this yeah it’s gonna happen no matter what and the other goals are just so

Difficult to do that if you have four goals that don’t include this that’s rough it’s a tough game it is yeah so anyway that is stardew valley the board game we talked a lot about it this was a long video i hope you enjoyed whatever aspect of it

You’re able to watch what are your final thoughts lots of luck um long but i actually really enjoy the moments i’m in it it’s looking back now i’m like man that was that was kind of weird that that part that part you know yeah but overall i really enjoy co-ops uh

Games where you’re working together and so this one uh it it pushes you to the end it’s very very interesting uh and i am very proud of them for making this game how about yourself yeah uh i am very very impressed by what they were able to do with it

Yes there’s a lot of luck but it’s all about the experience right like it’s it’s about how you feel when you’re playing it and this game has a ton of fun factors yeah you’re just it’s very engaging it is yeah it’s very very there’s a lot of player interaction you’re going to

Have a good time and it’s just gonna be i don’t know i’m impressed with it in general i really hope i mean my hope is that it brings more uh people into the hobby board gaming space so in general i think i think they did a good thing with it
