The End of A Minecraft Era Is Here…

For years OptiFine has been the number one when it comes to making Minecraft run better, but is it still? Where has it gone?? Lets take a look at optifine, what is going on with it, and some of the new and best alternatives to the legendary minecraft mod.

  1. OptiFine will always have a place in our hearts… Realistically, it's out-dated technology. Yes it still works, but the alternatives are just better now.

  2. you should consider making a video with some more research on the fabric performance mods, especially a pack like fabulously optimized which adds basically every OF feature into 1 single easy to install pack. optikai sounds like an improvement but is completely missing the mark regardless.

the thing is, optifine has been bad for years now. and i don't just mean slow to update, that's just the cherry on top. it actually struggles to keep up at its ONE job: performance. it's better than vanilla, sure, but that's a low bar. sodium etc are way ahead, and if you actually have the mods you're not missing out on any optifine features.

wait, did i say its one job? that's not right. optifine is trying so hard to do EVERYTHING at once: rendering performance, tick performance, disk performance, shaders, capes, zoom, connected textures, various resources for texture packs, heck that's definitely not all of it but i couldn't remember it all if i tried. you're probably thinking "but that sounds good/convenient". sure, i give convenient (but not much more than installing 1 pack in just as many clicks), but good? no. oh no.

you see, this is the primary reason mods like OF take so long to update. it's months now, but it's always been at least weeks. this is just way too many things on a single mod; so many points of failures, so many individual things that can break on a new update, and so many vastly different aspects of the game it's modifying to the best of its ability. "single responsibility principle" applies here.

it's also closed source, which is always just a big L for mods. you know it'd be faster if people were allowed to help, right? you're not even selling the mod, people will donate whether it's open or not! anyways, moving on..

so, what are sodium, lithium, c²me, nvidium etc doing differently? well first of all they are modern, not based on ancient code (i grant that optikai is exempt from this point). don't underestimate how important that is from a technical standpoint. but most importantly, these mods all do 1 type of job each; and they may even be made by entirely separate teams. that means many people working in parallel on a small amount of features that they're actually an expert in, rather than 1 team trying to do EVERYTHING at once. big difference. also, open source = faster due to better bug reporting and people helping out where they can.

also, mods that are done updating first can be installed early. you don't need to wait for everything to get done! i can usually play half of my personal performance pack within DAYS of any new release. the full pack will take a bit longer (not as long as OF lmao), but you don't need everything!

this also means that, if you want to, you can assemble a pack of just the features you want, like if you don't need capes or shaders you just don't install those mods. lighter pack, better performance. but even with a full pack, which is easy to install even for inexperienced players, performance will be better.

also, compatibility. i can't even remember how many times OF was the sole reason my modpacks would just straight up not load, or crash all the time. whenever anyone i knew had issues with mods, the FIRST thing i'd ask isn't "have you tried turning it off and on again", it's "try without OF". and it always worked. the new mods usually don't cause any trouble, and if they do you can just remove the 1 offending mod and have 90% of your performance mods and tweaks left intact.

the ONLY point optifine somewhat wins is that people are familiar with it and its installation. that's it, that's all, there's nothing else it does better nowadays. nostalgia is all. installing a pack with curseforge or modrinth is faster and probably easier than installing OF btw, just saying.

and this isn't coming from a place of hate. i AM an optifine donor! i used it all the time back then. but the new mods are simply better, optifine's era IS over. that doesn't take away from its past, just its future.

  3. Back in the day… I wasn't able to play without Optifine… I can't thank the developer of it enough for allowing me to be able to play Minecraft… Without it there was no way…

  4. The best alternative is the modpack "fabulously optimized" as it covers all the custom model/texture stuff as well as optimisation. From what I've heard it also does a much better job at optimising the game than Optifine. Really wish someone would just make a single mod with all the fab opt stuff in it though instead of forcing a whole ass modpack. Especially if it's better than Optifine then Optifine isn't really an alternative.

  5. The guy who "made optifine" sp actually stole all the code all he did was optimize fog rendering everything else was stolen literally copy pasted all he did is change names from mcpatcher to optifine plus the code is private and java so it's kinda sus.

  6. google trends for 27/08/2024 at 20:20:
    optifine: 14 searches
    sodium: 97 searches
    lithium: 54 searches

why does anyone still care abt optifine when sodium exists? And don't even say something like "sodium works worse in my machine than optifine 😢"

  7. Optifine is like an old truck, still running on the factory parts since it was built, and is in dire need of new parts, in which they're working on exactly that.

  8. I have Lithium and Sodium inside my Wynncraft modpack. Its great. also the mod pack has like 30 other mods and stuff…. There is also this mod better first person and I LOVE IT. Its litterally the best mod ever. Being able to see your feet when you look down XD

  9. Optifines' performance has been getting less less as mojang has actually started to optimize the base games it also brakes rendering and is incompatible with a ton of mods sodium/embedium is the way to go it boosts the game far better,
Imo optifine should ditch the optimization side of the mod and just focus on the texture pack enhancement side make it open source and port to fabric/quilt

  10. It’s definitely time for people to move on from optifine. It’s buggy, has horrible mod compatibility, takes forever to update, it’s closed source, and doesn’t improve performance nearly as well as alternatives.

Use the fabulously optimized modpack if you want something that provides all the same settings and features while being an improvement in almost every way

  11. Would have been nice if you mentioned, Fabulously Optimized as it totaly replaced optifine for me and many others.
Instalation is also easy with Curseforge.
But Modrinth can also download it 1 click.

  12. About the zoom thing… Just look up Logical Zoom, by LogicalGeekBoy, it's practically press C to zoom just like normal but it's a standalone fabric mod

  13. I'm a weirdo who is into draw distance, and Optifine still works better for me than Fabric/Lithium/Sodium, running draw distance in the 40's with shaders. I tried Sodium when I was playing with Distant Horizons and both mods were massive disappointments. Optifine's performance is underrated. Some of the problem can be seen in the other comments. There seems to be a massive misinformation going around as if Optifine is way slower than Sodium or something, and it's not even remotely true.

  14. Don’t mean to be rude but… u already missed that end of an era, this Optifine situation is old. Not to say that “that competition” u mentioned is not even a competition at this point, the differences in performance compared to like Sodium are big enough u’d have to be blind not to see it
