What they should have done is make it so Keep inventory is no longer addressed as a cheat, just an option to turn on and off
Just like in Terraria where: when you die you lose your coins but not your stuff, I think in minecraft peaceful and easy it would be fine to lose your xp but not your stuff. But keeping everything is a bit much. Bot otherwise I don't really see any issues with it.
How about these modes enable keep inventory by default, but it can then be toggled off?? Best of both worlds!
It definitely makes sense to have keepInventory enabled for at least one difficulty, and Peaceful is probably the most logical since dying in Peaceful despite having innate Regen probably means that you need that bonus. Having it on Easy… I honestly agree that there should be an option to enable it for a difficulty that has hostile mobs, for the same reason people mod Minecraft (or something more difficult like Project Zomboid): people want options, and you should provide them where reasonably practical. The big issue is just the insistence that keepInventory is 'cheating'. I always run it for the sake of convenience, but given the weird interactions like zombifying Villagers, the real issue is that they need to keep ironing out the 'kinks' in all difficulties.
Im cool with this change, "easy" and "normal" arent too different, so just play normal, and for peaceful I feel like its a good change
I don't understand why they want to force players to have this setting a certain way. Removing options from players is always bad, and setting defaults will work for 99.9% of players because most of them don't change anything.
to be fair it's not really that controversial since if you play on any difficulty lower than normal the game becomes devoid of any danger regardless
I really hate the "only upvote" system that a lot of gaming companies are going towards for feedback and bug reporting. It completely removes at-a-glance approval and only makes it look like its something the players care about…
What people don't realize is that Mojang changed cheats to commands so there is no more cheating and technically never was. Minecraft is a sandbox game. They should have this as an optional setting like the Experimental ones. Nothing wrong if people play with Keep Inventory. But the community is toxic as heck so they will get mad no matter what Mojang does.
3:00 at this point if new players cant figure it out, then get upset, maybe they shouldnt be playing
They need to stop using the word "cheats" in general. It adds stigma around things that in some cases are just accessibility features.
What the fuck kinda solution is this for such an easy problem? Just make it not a cheat?
just make the toggle separate of difficulty very obvious on world creation
I always enable the keep inventory gamerule, so this just makes my life easier. I never cared anything about the difficulty of minecraft

…said nobody, anywhere, ever.
Dying and losing all your things is one of the worst parts of the game, but it's a CORE part of the gameplay loop. It's the "worst" because it sucks to lose your things, but that's why the dangerous things are dangerous, that's why it's scary hearing a creeper priming when you're looking through a chest, are they going to make mob griefing off by default too? I can see this maybe being a thing in peaceful, MAYBE, but easy too? Come on
Mojang is already making the other difficulties harder (kind of) by adding hardcore mode, so it makes sense that they're adding both of these at the same time.
Players should keep have a random percentage chance of keeping each individual item on death, based on difficulty, and on easy and peaceful they keep whatever is in their main hand and offhand every time. Also armor has double the chance to keep. The cheat for keep inventory will instead manipulate the percentage chance for each item to survive. (I think that peaceful should have 100% keep chance because dying isn't really supposed to happen, easy should have 50% keep chance and 100% for armor, normal should have 25% and 50% for armor, while hard should have 10% keep chance and 20% for armor.) I like the idea of getting lucky sometimes even in hard, and keeping all of my good loot.
I was unaware that my favoured way to play Minecraft was controversial
Then again I play nothing but stupid huge tech packs so losing my inventory could cost days of play so that might be a little different
I like it
i'm gonna be honest i don't really see a problem with keep inventory being on by default on lower difficulties

I like it being on by default for peaceful. Idk, that just makes sense to me.
I always play with KeepInventory on and I agree that it should be left as toggleable regardless of difficulty.
Mojang is high af these days i swear
I play with Keep Inventory on because I simply don't find playing with Keep Inventory off to be fun. I find that playing with Keep Inventory on also enables me to be more risky with my plays without getting punished by having to grind again. I remember that I used to be scared stiff about the Nether because I didn't want to loose the items I had spent a long time getting, and instead of putting myself in a tense situation where I was risking a lot for loot, I simply didn't go to the Nether at all. That being said, I agree with a lot of comments here that Keep Inventory should be a toggle on world creation and not a cheat. I'd also personally like it if Keep Inventory didn't keep your XP, since to me loosing your XP is an impactful enough consequence of dying.
It would be better if death made you lose your xp and resources, but allowed you to keep your tools and armor. Because I think keep inventory is too forgiving, yet with it off it's too punishing.
