It was created way back when the snow biome was not guaranteed, and only a few worlds had one. It was a way to get snow and make an artificial snow biome
To get Christmas you can also just do Frost Moon. If you get to like 12 wave next day after event will be Christmas

frost legion is the best event ever
I like the invasion as is, I think a rework would be cool but not necessary. Not everything in the game needs a dire purpose, there are plenty of things that add nothing besides “heh, that’s cool”
