Are The Drop Updates BAD for Minecraft?
Recently Minecraft has released the pale garden through the brand new 1.21.4 garden awakens drop. With it came a lot of cool new features like the creaking, pale oak, resin, and so on. However, I have personally noticed that there is a lot less hype going around about this drop when compared to Minecraft’s normal updates. This is likely due to the brand new drop system mojang has been adopting since 1.21. Today I want to take a look at the drops we have gotten so far and give my opinion on if Mojang should continue the drop system or if it is actually bad for minecraft.

Awesome video 😊❤
Drop system is good only because it allows the devs to improve the game code-wise.
During 1.16, a lot of dev time was spent on rewriting the code of biomes and worldgen. If these systems existed beforehand, they would've had more time to add more gameplay features.
Currently, in drops, that's exactly what's happening. We get very little gameplay updates, but a LOT of technical updates. 1.20.5 gave us item components, fully replacing old junky NBT items, 1.21 gave us data-driven enchantments and improved jigsaw structure system, 1.21.2-1.21.4 gave us a lot of things, such as full control over item models and more percisw biome music control.
If everything continues the same way, then after a year of these drops datapacks might get as powerful as most mods!
They should have added white pumpkins.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks the MC community acts like cry babies. You mentioned Twitter, but Instagram is bad too. No matter what Mojang’s social media team posts whether it’s an update feature, add-on showcase, goofy post, whatever the comments will get spammed with the same fridge gif of a guy being disappointed and some comments about some lawsuit. It’s obnoxious.
The pale garden is empty and has no in game incentive to go there, if this goes on they’re going to waste cool mob concepts and never expand on them.
5:37, No fuk that where's the black pumpkin 😢
I prefer the smaller updates because I like them more
Cool video, unfortunately you have an annoying and gay voice
7:24 That's so funny, you were my top channel of the year 😭
Take a shot every time he says “drop” in the first 5 minutes
i think mojang has shifted away from updates that require people to make a new world to explore since the world gen changes in 1.18. new updates are meant to bring people back to existing worlds to explore new features
I guess like most people who play Minecraft I'll find out when I install it again a few months later for my usual three weeks a year and never get a chance to see any of it, unless I want to turn those three weeks into an insomniac wiki homework assignment
I don't know man, I'm just happy to get more wood types
hopefully we'll see Ebony in the future
i kinda like the new blocks but the creaking doesn’t pose a threat especially seeing as how the biome is so rare it should at least be balanced to semi-diamond-netherite gear. maybe the creakings damage could pierce armor and make those hearts not regenerative for 15 mins called a sap effect
The drop system sounds like a throwback to the updates Minecraft had back in Classic, Indev, Indef, Alpha, & most of Beta, I think….
It's said that over 75% of the Minecraft playerbase uses Minecraft as an art tool & don't care about the game mechanics. Thay have folders of dozens or hundreds of worlds, single biome, superflat, etc. Their focus is on new blocks & what they can do with redstone, & new biomes mean lots of new blocks. Some players see Minecraft like LEGO releasing new kits & buckets & some see it as an MMORPG releasing new DLC, & it's hard for the developers to please both, especially when the latter group is more irritable.
I must say your videos are the perfect balance of discussing whatever the topic is and adding humorous bits. Also, your editing is simple enough yet effective. Quality vids 👍
Also 4:10 was a well spent 3 seconds of my life.
Ngl I think that the drops each year should be themed each drop gradually improving a certain aspect of the game, this would also allow better constructive criticism and stronger focuses on different parts of the updates: for example: with the nether update they could of released the soul sand valley in jan, bastions and ruined portals in march, crimson and warped forests in may and finish off the update with the basalt deltas in July, yes it would be labour intensive but it will strengthen the content of the update, allowing for more and quicker features, they should do this for the end
I think drops are better for the actual development because they can add improvements all over the place and really integrate them into the game instead of being forced to have oke big „mascot-feature“, everything revolves around. This made the updates at times feel like an extra, instead of a progression of the game as a whole and making the entire update a miss, if one doesn’t care for this big feature, Tricky Trials for example didn’t offer a whole lot for creative mode players.
Marketing wise however I fully agree with you. If they want to sustain the drop system, they need to find ways to create more hype around them
With the promise of releasing new stuff more often, I thought the Pale Garden was about to release in a month, but we had to wait like 3 months.
So dumb
Stupid random bullshit is more in line with what made minecraft popular in the first place.
Not knowing what to expect made speculating on what would come next a fun process.
I agree. One big update in the summer and one smaller drop in the winter would be the play
As someone who likes to keep up with modern Minecraft content AND play with QOL mods, this new approach seems torturous
I'm pretty happy with the system so far. Bundles were the perfect thing to just drop into the game, as they're very small, yet very useful, and can be used immediately. I'm not really the sort of person who needs to be hyped to play Minecraft, so I'm happy with new Quality of Life every now and then. Fireworks boosting Elytra in a minor 1.11 update is another example of what would make for a good drop.
I am a bit worried about needing to explore a lot if they keep adding things like the Pale Garden, especially since the Pale Garden is somewhat rare.
I think the drops will get better over time as this is a new system
4:02 I’m apart of the 10% stop making me feel old
Guys you could say they “Dropped” the ball 😃
They “Dropped” the ball 😃
They “Dro-
i agree but theoretically this means they can take four years of small drops but then release the end update and have it filled with alot more features than the updates before anyway
Only reason I voted for drops being better was due to 2.2 trauma
I loved the Trails & Tales and Tricky Trials updates, and it felt like Mojang finally got back on their feet after the 3 part Caves & Cliffs debacle. But now I feel the drop system is going to set them back all over again.
I agree with all your points about too frequent updates causing version conflicts in both world gen & mod/resource packs.
Plus, these small features feel really underwhelming and don’t really draw in new or returning players like major updates do.
They need to add reset chunks in case they keep adding
0:18 xD
NFL would like Dan to play more horror games, I remember those making my day on some off days after work
The best and most liked updates were the updates that improved existing things instead of adding more things
The past 3 major updates where just way to lacking for me so i don't like them and I play on a old world
My hope for the drops is that they make big updates bigger, allowing for more development time – although less frequent – whilst also polishing overlooked aspects of the game (like from Cubfan135's series ‘The List’ and keeping the game relevant in these linger breaks.
For example:
1.21.0-1 : Tricky Trials Update (size: large)
1.21.2 : Bundles of Bravery Drop (size: small)
1.21.4 : Pale Garden Drop (size: medium)
1.21.5 : Fletching Table Drop (size: medium)
1.21.6 : Shuriken Drop (size: small)
1.21.7 : Badlands Drop (size: medium)
1.21.8 : Andesite/Diorite/Granite Varients Drop (size: small)
1.21.9 : New Plants Drop (size: medium)
1.22.0 : End Update (size: very large)
Rather than:
1.21.0-1 : Tricky Trials update (size: large)
1.22.0 : Arts and Parts update (size: large)
1.23.0 : The Combat Update, 2 (size: very large)
*Where small is ‘this will take a week or few to develop professionally’, medium is ‘this may take a month or few to develop professionally’, large is ‘This will take about 8-12 months to complete’ & very large is ‘this will take more than a year to complete.’
Like in less time, we get a wider range of stuff, and then a larger update at the end that really draws in. If we're comparing, working on one drop and a very big update simultaneously seems to be better to me than on one big update at a time.
For me, I think drops work in the sense that they aren’t tied to a specific theme for a huge amount of content and can provide a wider variety of content. The garden awakens also had so many new QoL features on bedrock atleast, if that kind of game health is gonna be part of the drops system I’m so down.
Plus plus, they could use drops to finally start making good on those mob vote losers getting added 🤷♂️
I haven't felt an ounce of hype for anything they've added in these drops. Which to be fair hasn't been very much.
I dont like much "drops", even that name itself is bit annyoing to me since term "drops" we already have in minecraft, I dont know why they couldnt call it "miniupdate" or something, however objectively, it causes issues for modpacks and servers most, mods and servers will need to get released for those versions so people can play them, which not everyone will be doing 4 or so times per year for sure (in case of mods it can make only harder time to get desired mods for compatible version as one modder may release only for X.Y.15 and other only on X.Y.14), my main personal issue would be then that I want to not make million survival worlds, I stick to one till I literally lose it (likely because of computer totally die) and I prefer surely to not just /give stuff to myself in survival, but I also dont want to travel 5k blocks far beyond explored borders just to get resin, this is mostly not issue for me as wandering trader can get you almost everything from biom.. but resin.. it may feel like not issue at all, however, it is issue in long term, if they will be updating slowly one by one biom after biom or adding something as this, I will always feel bad to travel only for sake of that, else after some time, I may end up with giant world filled by nothing as I need to travel farther and farther, bundles I didnt mind to be released separately at all, since you got only craftable item, nothing was really neeed to be done, but I will most likely effectively play as if I had big updates anyway
lack of hype is also issue, people were making ton of videos, and thus motivated people to talk and play game, keeping game relevant, this has not much to talk about, but illager and creaking relationship, and I dont think we get world and lore building in every tiny update, and they also still have enough of promised and potential content they could go with to make bigger updates, sniffer would be hated equally so if it comes in bigger or smaller update, issue at thing as that isnt less than people assuming it would get more than two plants with no special properties, other issue with big updates was when they overpromised, such as birch forests renovation that never came
another thing I am sure of is that I am sure we get actually less of new content overall, it may look more as now you get one biom and new mob, next time you get new bow, next time you get new mob and other time they get you new utility item, that is four different things separately, but in one update with them all, it is one update only, and it is not enough.. devs likely will have to tune features more often, working separately on smaller things before putting them together and actually seeing what all dont work, not sure how much different it will be from normal development process but to me it seems contraintuitive, I always assumed devs want to make as few versions as possible, and not intentionally making as many as possible, small updates work fine for bug fixes and such, or adding something small as bundles form time to time but not as regular approach.. in my opinion..
I dont even look forward for new stuff for minecraft at moment.. partially as I dont know what will be that new stuff
If mojang is doing it, than it’s gonna be terrible

I do think drops are great but the major problem is that they revealed everything in minecraft live, sure resin and eyebloosms r cool but they r nothing compared to the creaking , but i understand y they did that because if mojang showed like 2 features the community will become crybabies and i also think garden awakens drop came to early i think mojang should have released this drop at like 20th dec which would have given them a little more time. This is my fear , mojang would rush drops to mak them frequent and make them unpolished but at the same time bundles and armoured paws were very well polished and exited everyone so maybe it is only the garden awakens? IDK tbh the best we can do is wait and see the garde was a cool experience but dint get me as exited, heck i was exited for bats and pots because finally we can place items in pots
trillionth
are you not on winter break?
0:18 LOOOL I CAN'T 😆
5:33 download the fabric mod "Instant Feedback", it adds fallen trees, pale bushes, fog, and white pumpkins to the pale gardens.
I think your video hinges on the idea that a major update still isn't happening in the summer. In my opinion and based on what the devs have said, there will still be a medium to big sized update in the summer.
