Haunted Chocolatier – Expectations, Predictions, and Hopes

While I’ve been enjoying myself some Stardew Valley 1.6, I find myself looking to the future a lot. Not all games last forever, and the most obvious game to look forward to is Haunted Chocolatier, Concerned Ape’s next project.

I also found it surprising that I haven’t had a video dedicated to just talking about Haunted Chocolatier yet, so this one will serve as a discussion of everything we already know, and predicting the future!

  1. i say to the people who are desperate for haunted chocolatier the same thing i say to my friends who are desperate for silksong:
let em cook the longer you wait, the quality of the game you're waiting for gets even better
i have the faithful confidence in Team Cherry and ConcernedApe to sit back and prepare myself for when we prove once again that in the modern day, the best games are all Indie

  2. I think Haunted Chocolatier will be great, but I think people should adjust their expectations: it’s not going to be Stardew 1.6. Stardew is great but has received so many updates for its polished final form. CA has definitely grown as a dev but I’m still gonna be happy with its initial form.

  3. I really wish we could get the game soon! On the other hand I hope he doesn't work himself to death, so yeah. I'll be excited anyway! Also I agree about the fishing, I don't think it would make some sense. Aaaand I assume someone will make a mod anyway …

  4. Personally my main hope is that the game wont be as dependent on the Wiki as Stardew valley is. My first playthough of Stardew was before the Wiki was fully developed, playing it now it feels like i need to check the wiki every few minutes cause there is so much going on it's hard to keep track of and so few ingame tools to help with that.

  5. 7:15 Maybe the worlds where you go to get ingedients are parts of stardew valley, and act like a dream workd or something. That would give some sense to the granpa "terrible dream" thing.

  6. I love CA's evolution of skill as an artist. His characters and environments look so good.

Also, you even mentioning putting fish in the chocolate has made me really sick. Thanks a lot. 🤣

  7. i thought about it too yk that the game will only be in winter (at least in the town) but i really hope CA will add the other seasons as well :/ even if it's only for aesthetics. maybe it's just me but i hate winter (irl and in games :D). so so excited for this game tho

  8. I'm actually so excited for this to come out. I love Stardew Valley and also its modding community as well. This game looks so stunning already.

I love the shopkeeping genre, I want to make my own games as I have a bunch of ideas I have been sitting on as an artist / writer with no coding experience. It takes SUCH a long time to do even one of those aspects. I am surprised he has shown us so much already, to be honest.

Also, Sal!! Love your videos. I love tuning in and seeing what your theories are plus watching your series. Big fan! Excited to see what's next!

  9. I thought that chocolatier only referred to a person. Didn't realize it could also mean a place. Hearing it used to refer to a place in this video had me so thrown off and confused at first.

  10. I expect this game to be a lot more limiting due to its very specific setting. In Stardew Valley the player had a lot of freedom to really make this farm their own. Thus, Haunted Chocolatier will probably not be as replayble and time-consuming.

  11. I think Haunted Chocolatier and Stardew Valley are in the same world based on the Stardew in game movie “Natural Wonders: Exploring Our Vibrant World”.

It’s an in game documentary showing different places around their world. All are known places (Ginger Island Pelican Town Zuzu City) except Prairie Island, a place with a big spooky castle on the map.

  12. Something I really do hope is we get a better relationship system. Most of the connection comes from good personality and being really iconic. I don’t really feel like we’re getting to really know them and grow a relationship that much in Stardew.

  13. In terms of the connections to SDV, I think small references are fine. Those chocolates, obviously, but also a nod like the galaxy or infinity weapons being available would be cool. I just don’t want those obvious references where SDV is deliberately pointed out or referenced in a way… like if Gus or Robin just randomly appeared

  14. Personally, I would still like a fishing machanic. I know it wouldn't necessarily make the most sense for gameplay, but since there's meant to be a whimsical combat area we get ingredients from, I think a pond where you can fish up gummy fish would be fun.

  15. I got Stardew on a whim not long after it came out, and I've been in love with it ever since. Super excited for Ape's work on the game and I'm more than happy to wait patiently for it to be released whenever HE thinks it's ready.

  16. i wonder if it will have co-op or not, would be so cool to play another concerned ape game co-op with the loved ones, i dont know if it would fit in with the concept tho

  17. Haunted Chocolatier’s development and relation to Stardew Valley feels very similar to the way Toby Fox has worked with Undertale and Deltarune. They both created a stellar game, as nearly a solo dev, that defied a lot of standards for the genre, that acts as a great way to learn experience in dev work. This is followed up by a newer game, which allows them to use that experience to create something far greater and bolder than that previous project

The main difference here is that Toby now has a proper team. ConcernedApe is still largely solo

  18. I absolutely love how you take the time in your videos to make the fonts, the background match the aesthetic of the game. It was so evident in Stardew Valley videos but looking forward to the new HC aesthetic! It must take a ton of time but really adds to the vibe of the video!

  19. Something I hadn't noticed before watching this video is the clock inside the tree (where do I get one of those). Maybe it's there because it's perpetually night time? Is the clock stuck? I also liked what another commenter said about the goal being to gradually restore the seasons.

  20. SV has a serious problem. Adventure games are not good on a clock system. I found myself really struggling to explore new areas because of having to be in bed at a certain time. Had unexpected difficulties on ginger island. Could not use tent kit in the volcano even when I paid attention to the clock. When searching for golden walnuts I kept losing track of time. I find myself learning so much of the game online (videos/wiki) rather than in-game because of having to keep track of the clock. Since HC is going to be more adventurous (less farm sim) hope he does away with the current clock system.
