Spectre would be your best magic armor but needs specter bars which require ecto plasm and chlorophyte bars to make a set but you have decide if life steal or extra damage since there 2 head pieces a hood and an armored one.
The hood does life steal but reduces ur magic damage buy 40% the armored head piece does extra damage enemies nearby.
54ish Spectre bars needed i think that's about 27 to 30ish ectoplasm and
270ish in chlorophyte Ore plus need Titanium forge or Adamantite forge to make the bars needed
Ectoplasm I believe drops from dungeon spirits but only after plantera has been unalived once.
Pre plantera I'd say chlorophyte would be ur best mage/magic set . So it sounds like you will be mining alot chlorophyte to get ur next 2 sets good luck.
Mystic frog(btw rare spawn like 1 out 30) if throw purification powder on it it turns into friendly npc slime
If u go hell(the underworld ) and find the tortured soul and throw purification powder on them u can get tax collector npc aswell
He cool causes passively over time collects money which u can collect from him .
