I had the same weird interaction with Better Crafting and Love of Cooking, if you cook with the BC menu you won't get cooking experience. You have to go into BC's config and disable its own cooking menu to get LoC experience again.

28:21 the premium coops/barns were added with the 1.6 update, there's some new animals that were added with them, one of them requires a secret note to unlock

Something I do with Better Crafting is add a tab filtered on “Everything”, which uses default recipe sorting. The cooking menu lets you do that as well.
