Terraria Lore And Its Unreasonable Scale
This video was originally put together as a power point presentation for my friends called “Terraria Lore And Its Unreasonable Scale” but it quickly went from a 5 minute presentation to a 18 minute production JUST to tell my friends how crazy the lore of Terraria is. 4 Months later it is now a full video, hope you all enjoy it.

eater of worlds could also be like the digestive track idk
misspelling in the first thirty seconds of your video. This doesn't mean a lot to most but made me click away from your video. Just some food for thought. Cheers
I like the idea that the EOW and DOW is the intestines of Cthulhu, it would explain why its so long and why EOW is fleshy
Boss: dies
Bucky Ducky: barely inconvenience
Great video!!
Why are you dressed like da joker
ive been playin terraria for years and i knew nun of this… awesome vid dude!
Nice video
why do we slay all the living things of the world like it's sports, why did the romans have gladiators. killing = fun
perhaps the player killed golem because we seek to solve the worlds issues, and not merely hold them at bay. so long as the cult exists it will keep trying and no one is able to keep up defenses forever. us or them type situation.
I was watching Khaios's lore accurate dungeon build video, and at some point he shows these official lore pages where it mentions that the only reason the mechanical recreation of Cthulhu by the Mechanic failed to be complete, is that she hadn't finished the mechanical brain yet by the time we free her.
I'm not sure it has anything to do with Golem. This theoretical 'mechanical recreation' of Cthulhu, and Cthulhu himself are two different things, and perhaps the ritual was their fail-safe method of summoning/creating him since the mech recreation failed. Not that that makes much sense either given the gap in time of defeating the mechs to them beginning the ritual, but hey, at the end of the day the lore was an afterthought.
Also I'm still not necessarily sure that Moon Lord and Cthulhu are even the same thing, since it doesn't really make sense that Cthulhu's parts are spread across the world, and then all subsequently killed, only for him to still exist and serve as the final boss later?
But regardless, I think the player is probably meant to prevent impending doom 'for good.' As in, sure, things were peaceful before the player showed up, or during certain points in progression (pos- mechs, pre-golem) but the corruption/crimson were still slowly encroaching, and at any point any of the parts of Cthulhu could have attacked and destroyed everything, or they could have been put back together by the cult, or the Mechanic's mechanical versions could have been put back together by the cult, and Cthulhu could have come back once and for all and ended everything.
So, although we don't have a direct explanation for why the player even has any business with the Wall of Flesh or the temple, ultimately if these are the steps necessary to fight and completely destroy Cthulhu/the Moon Lord, so that it's not just a hope that he will never return, but that it's a guarantee, then that's what the player will do. Now, it doesn't necessarily make sense from the player's perspective that doing these things will make that happen, but perhaps the player character knows something we don't.
But uhh, good video. For as ill-conceived and out of the way as it is, I've always enjoyed Terraria's lore and it's cool to see a video about it!
Terraria has the most confusing and vague lore I’ve ever seen in any game😭🙏
"The Corruption is just a purple variant of the Crimson"
as an OG Terraria Veteran, that physically hurt me
The EoW being a spine is a cool idea, but I always thought it was a corrupted digestive system.
Would make the "eating worlds" thing make sense if they were literally Cthulu's stomach/intestines.
in order to completely destroy cthulhu we have to first release the ancient spirts of dark and light that only come out when the world is in its unbalanced pure chaotic form. just my own theory on why we kill the guide lmao
i like duck 🦆
i like the idea that the player character doesnt have any idea of whats going on. It just goes around killing stuff and it somehow works out lol
4:05 Do you have a source for the bats being demons? They definitely aren't confirmed to be so in-game, but maybe outside of it they were said to be demons; I definitely haven't checked myself, and I don't know where that would be found!
10:51 I'd suggest reading their bestiary entry, since it seems you somehow missed it. All of their bestiary entries include "this tower holds the seal locking away a terrifying tyrant."
the cultists were trying to provent the invasion, us killing them starts it because they aren’t there to stop it. so your theory is a lil wrong but you were kinda right when you said you think WE are the bad guys. I lowk think the lore to our character is that we are js power hungry, that’s literally irl why you play the game is to get stronger. it gives a reason for killing the WoF, lizards, and the Cultists.
The celestial pillars are whats binding the moon lord to the moon once they fall the last thing holding him there is gone so destroying the pillars frees him from his celestial prison
Counter-Theory 1: The Wall of Flesh (aka World Guardian) wasn't so much preventing the dark as merely keeping it in stasis. In order to actually destroy the dark, we needed to unleash it first. Note that the Guide himself directs us to seek out and defeat the Wall of Flesh once we're strong enough for it; he wouldn't have done that unless it was a necessary step in our mission to save Terraria.
Counter-Theory 2: We killed Plantera and the Lihzahrd people because of their past refusal to help the Dryads during the war against Cthulhu. The Dryad is one of our close allies after all. Note that Plantera only attacked after we destroyed one of her bulbs, so we were always the aggressor.
Counter-Theory 3: The Lunatic Cultists ramping up their activities post-Golem wasn't because Golem was deterring them prior, rather it's because the Cultists started panicking after seeing us kick Plantera and Golem's asses back-to-back (on top of the earlier setback from us destroying the mechanical Cthulhu parts). After Golem's defeat, the Cultists started summoning the Moon Lord, but that wasn't the original plan — the plan was to bring back Cthulhu, but the Moon Lord is Cthulhu's (probably much weaker) brother. Summoning the Moon Lord was the Cultists' last-ditch effort to get us out of the way, but then we kicked his ass too.
Can you do calamity mod lore next? It’s completely different from normal Terraria.????
It makes more sense if the eater is the intestines. I mean, "The Eater of Worlds?" Eating? Digestion?
first, the crimson is a grotesque living flesh orgasm while the corruption is just political issue- nvm the corruption is just a disease. second, the pillars are to keep the players accompanied so the moonlord (that is speculated to be an infected vrsion of cthulu but still the real cthulu) can come in full peace. great video tho
5:12 so I'm pretty sure it's like a Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods situation, where you have to free the overwhelming evil in order to kill it for good. You can't get access to strong gear, a way to kill the Moon Lord, or a better, safer way to cure the world evils until after the WoF is defeated.
Edit: 11:11 also, chlorophyte spawns as soon as you enter hardmode, not when the mech bosses are defeated. You can mine it once they're defeated, though.
I interpret the player character as a neutral party whose main motivation is power, which can make them the villain depending on how you look at it. Was the player prophetically sent to kill the moon lord or do they just want to conquer the world of Terraria? If anything, defeating the Wall of Flesh directly endangers the world, but I don’t think that’s quite what the player is worried about
So by the cultists’ point of view:
1. Some dude shows up in your world long after your master has died. You think nothing of it.
2. This random sociopath starts killing the disembodied remains of your master and frees the old man’s curse, and starts killing the undead of the dungeon and also freeing the mechanic that you forced to remake parts of your master (ironically, the ones the terrarian destroyed)
3. By now, this guy is likely strong enough to kill the biggest thing blocking your way to summoning/reconstructing your master. You give demons voodoo dolls in hope the terrarian’s psychopathic tendencies give in.
4. It works. The spirits of light and dark have been released and you can now FINALLY FINISH THE ULTIMATE MECHANICAL CTHUL-
5. The terrarian killed those too. Great. Well, plan b I guess. You start the rapid growth of chlorophyte to aid the terrarian in slaughtering Plantera.
6. The terrarian has successfully killed the flower, destroying a large chunk of the jungle, and has access to the jungle temple. You haven’t been able to get in to such a fortified place. What’s in there is preventing the ritual.
7. Despite doing literally nothing to him, the psychopath decided to commit xenocide and destroy the guardian.
8. Your fellow cultists begin the ritual immediately, seizing the opportunity. Luckily the potential backfire is fighting a fish and some butterfly lady right now. This will work. Finally.
9. The terrarian killed the cultists. The lead cultist is attempting to fight him off to stall for time until the ritual is complete. It seems to work!
10. Finally! After so long! Your master’s army had laid pillage to the entire world! The world is now his KINGDO-
11. The terraria killed the army. How!? Whatever. Your master is finally here. He will make short work of that deranged man-
12. HOW IN THE- SON OF A-
The corruption is a virus that spreads across your world to kill everything, including itself. It has no connection to cthulu in any way.
The moon lord is cthulu because it's stated in lore that cthulu ran away to the moon after the dryads beat him up. Cthulu is still regenerating after the fight but since you destroyed all of his backup body parts (The mechanical bosses) he has no choice but to fight with his barely regenerated body to take over the world.
The terrarian probably kills the wall of flesh because he is entrusted with the job of stopping cthulu but can't stop the revival of cthulu without releasing the spirits of light and dark.
The Lizahards were locked in the jungle temple for long enough that they turned from genius mechanical, able to build robots like golem into savages, attacking outsiders on sight, which is why we killed them
Good video👍
This is such a great video man, really well made. You defo deserve more recognition for the quality of the video.
The lunatic cultist is manipulating everything behind the scenes, but not as much as you say.
If the cultist really wanted to summon the wall of flesh, he would've just thrown it in himself, instead of convincing the terrarian to do it for him.
The cultist kidnapped the mechanic and forced her to make four mechanical parts of cthulu, however three of them were defeated by you and the fourth one (Ocram) never had a chance to be made.
Plantera was always in the jungle, you just couldn't fight her before mech bosses because it would give you op gear too early in the game. Plantera was used by the dryads to seal the dungeon and after she is defeated she drops the temple key, likely a distraction.
While the terrarian is busy killing golem, the lunatic cultists start realising that they'll be next and desperately try to summon cthulu, which works, creating the pillars that act as a gateway to the world from the moon.
Official lore from the wiki:
The Crimson is a single emergent living being connected directly to each world, sharing a hive mind, and solely focused on restoring balance at all costs. Thousands of worlds before the one on which you stand now have been absorbed by this being. Many misguided people have made the horrific mistake of raising the Crimson to the level of a deity – conducting human sacrifices to it to placate the monstrosity or seek its favor. The Crimson gladly consumes these bodies, becoming one with them and producing terrifying beings, who lose the ability to feel and blindly follow the hive mind.
The Corruption
The Corruption is a cancer caused by the sins of those living in the worlds of Terraria. The vile actions and thoughts present in all beings feed the growth of the Corruption as it spreads relentlessly across each world. The Corruption knows nothing else but to consume everything it touches, leaving behind terrible creatures of hate that exist for the sole reason to cause pain in punishment for the unearned pleasure experienced by living things. After the Corruption restores balance to life, it destroys it with the goal of turning the world into a desolate abyss void of life.
The hallow
The Hallow, on the other hand, is of an entirely different nature. Within each world is a Guardian who serves as the worlds[sic] master and core. Once this creature is destroyed the world will release the Ancient Spirits of Light and Dark to expedite the process of finding a new Guardian. It is here when the Hallow is created and functions as an overcompensation of purity, taken to the absolute extreme. The Hallow cures threats that would attempt to violate the critical balance of life, killing anything in its path as though it were treating an infection – whether friend, foe, or neutral party. Ultimately, the Hallow serves to push back against the never-ceasing encroachment of control.
Will the ocean background shows other islands but this is not enough to prove that the player is on the island too will speaking to the princess NPC when she talks about making peace with other "kingdoms" she says
"The Pumpking can be rather two-faced, it seems. I shall not give up on peace with his spooky people!" And for Ice Queen, "Diplomacy did not work so well with the Ice Queen, I'm afraid. She's rather cold-hearted"
This could mean that both Pumking and Ice Queen have their own kingdom outside the player island and another reason may be the floating island sometimes you will see flying ships in the background (on windy days ) those ships are pirates ship's you will know that from the steampunker when she says "Should I become an air pirate? I've considered becoming an air pirate" (not sure if the pirates invasions are air pirates)and what pirates are known for? Treasure hunting or stealing, and what floating island is known for? There loot
But also there are cities of floating islands in one of the trading cards in Steam The Wyvern one says "The reason why flying city is a ghost town" Will we only see a small island with one house which means those cities must be outside of the character island and another reason is that there are more people in the world than the NPCS but they may be in other islands the lantern night is almost full with lanterns and all that can't be made by 3-6 NPCs and some enemies bestiary talks about other terrarian like the Telsa bestiary says " named after legendary terrarian" and the possessed bestiary " a terrarian girl that possessed by the evilest spirits"
So this is my theory about the terraria will this is what i found for now atlast
3:15 literally no? How would that work the eyes are almost bigger then skeletron
The corruption represent the bad part of the world and the hallow the good. The crimson was the world bleeding. Its very weird. Also, i think the mech bosses are meant to be to speed up cthulus revival. Guide is cthulus brother btw
Since the mechanical bosses are recreations of the body parts of cthulu, we can agree that the eow is just a corrupted version of his spine
just realised you said we killed his spine later on in part three
