The salmon fact is so true. I've played for 3.3k hours, fished for ores in almost all my playthroughs, and only found out about the fish some 2.5k hrs in.

Lakes large enough to fish salmon do rarely generate. Though, in my experience, only near the edges, just before the beaches.
