Lesson time in the commentsection. Today's lesson is about rate of expansion of the map:
Exponential growth is when each increment is a plural of the previous size of the map (e.g. populations increasing with x%).
Polynomial growth is when each increment is a plural of the previous increment of the map.
Linear growth is when each increment is constant
So when the boarder increases: each layers increases with its previous increment plus 8 blocks as each corner requires 2 more blocks to expand to the new size.
Therefore the expansion of the map is not exponential in terms of the blocks discovered, but polynomial (and more precisely: quadratic).
