Here's an idea for a new video, have you made a video before about what names every bachelor & bachelorette might likely give to their children or pets?
my (probably untrue) theory that i choose to believe is that leo is their brother and their parents had him while away (he’s clearly old enough to remember the crash so old enough to remember things) and since they don’t write they felt like they couldn’t just be like “oh yeah you have a 3 year old brother now” so they never contacted the girls and then died in leo’s backstory
honestly it would be rly cool to have a heart event with emily/haley where their parents visit, and we can see them confront them about their absence; i hadnt given their parents disappearance much thought before, so this video is a fun thought exercise!!

I've always assumed their parents are dead by shipwreck, because unlike Kent who comes back after 1 year, they NEVER come back after 5, 10, 50 or more years have passed. My theory is that they are most likely dead by now unless we see more of them in a future update
I made a mod in which Haley and Emily’s parents make an appearance and I put my take on why they have been away for so long.
Haley does mention her parents in 1.6, she says that they have told her and Emily that they could join them anytime in their travels. But Haley says “Who would like to spend their vacations with their parents?”

I began to wonder if their parents could even return to Pelican Town. They could be fugitives, and this "extended cruise" may be due to warrants against them. "But what crime would be that bad?" There's a war on. It's entirely possible they've profited from that war – in a bad way. Why else would they skip their own child's wedding? Incidentally, where was the mother of the farmer during that wedding? She can write letters, but not attend a milestone ceremony?
Based on Emily's dialogue about her parents (3:55), I wonder if the family is not from Pelican Town, and if this was never the "family home" but rather bought specifically for Emily and Hayley to live in – there are only the two bedrooms, after all…
The other possibility I can think of is that this is the parents' retirement home, and the sisters are "housesitting" in the mean time, receiving a small wage from their parents for the house's upkeep. Your theory would still hold true here (that Hayley spends the money on shopping while contributing nothing, so Emily needs to make up the difference).

I could see emilys family being that kind that fell into HUGE credit card debt. Maybe they were never essentially wealthy, but had a need to spend more and more, so they had alot of really expensive things. Emily might not just be paying for the house and haleys expenses but whatever spending habits her parents have as well. Ive always assumed they just worked out of the country and thats why theyd be gone for so long. maybe thats why emily still has to pay current bills while they are working on past expenses. Idk its hard to say. It is super weird that they havent visited for you know.. years..
Either way ive got a whole lot of respect for enily and feel so so bad for the girl..

I imagine their parents like, their father is a kinda person who focused his job (maybe a lawyer or something like that) and he doesn't spent so much time with his family. On the other hand i think their mother much like Haley. I can imagine that these two spent time together shopping or chatting about clothes. And i think Emily is always feel different. Like she is unfit to her family. İn her (i guess) two heart scene when she finds that parrot she says "You are like me right? We are different then to others" this is actually really sad because she is ignored but still working so hard. I mean didn't Haley literally say she is doubt that Emily and her actually sisters? You don't deserve her at all popular girl
Banger video! I haven't thought about their dynamic much to be honest but this gives me more perspective to Emily. Respect for Emily!! She is still so sweet even after taking all this on. I'd be bitter and tired to be honest. 56 hours a week. I don't even work that much currently. Absolutely not.

You noticed what I noticed. I kinda figured the money was just tight because it was going toward private eyes who are looking for their parents, or bailing their parents out of something. But yeah, without that, you can't just blame Haley for this. Fashion, tailoring clothes, photography, and animal rehabilitation are all rather pricy hobbies, even if there are ways to do it on a budget. Now think about the Emma we see in her events. She's expressive, spiritual, and self actualized. The type who cares more for the journey of the creative process than art than the work itself. You could bet your ass she's an intuitive impulse spender whenever her heart is in it. Who else decides to treat a wounded wild bird while supposedly working off a debt? I mean, someone financially struggling may be likely to pass it along to someone who can help it if they were worried like she was, but no. She brings it into her room, gives it a perch, and mends it's broken wing. Likely her next move was to run out to Marnie's ranch to acquire some parrot food, or schedule an appointment with Dr Harvey, and try to get him to play vet. She may be the more financially mature one of the sisters, understanding that they need an income to offset their creative and expressive ambitions. But I read her as the type who follows her true will without hesitation. Even if it comes with a price tag that wasn't in the expendable income for last weeks paycheck.

Oh, they're spies.
Either spies for the Ferngill Republic, in which case they can't return home because of how deeply they're embedded within Gotoro society. Or spies for the Gotoro Empire, in which case they cannot return "home" because their cover has been blown somehow. The latter, especially, would explain why they no longer have the money that made Haley a "rich girl."
But either way on which nation they are spies for. And either way on whether Emily and Haley actually know or not.
I like to think that Emily was directly told to keep the house in order because of hayley's immature character and that's why she is still taking care of the house, even after you married her

I thought Emily worked at Saloon on Fridays (when you marry her) for old time sake- to me since the Saloon is the busiest on Fridays, she wants to help Gus out, and doesn’t care much about payment-
Anyways I do wish we got more information about their parents, it’s a interesting topic!
