In my current playthrough, ive been building more than the bare minimum for my npc housing, and it's been really nice to help space out progression a bit more. I also have an underground trophy hall that has been really satisfying to expand as ive progressed through the game. Breaking it up this way has helped me enjoy the sandbox elements of the game that I haven't really appreciated as much before.
Beat the game on master but you can't cheese the bosses at all I've seen a ton of players using cheesable weapons like the drippler crippler or the daedalus stormbow or fight duke fishron pre boss to get his op items to cheese the bosses so do that but most cheeseable items are banned
One somewhat obscure mod I highly recommend is "Sane Randomizer". It randomly makes every weapon, armor, and enemy stat from 50% to 200% , randomizes drops, and NPC shops. But it doesn't affect bosses, separates prehardmode from hardmode items, and keeps some items required for progression fixed, so it doesn't break progression. I tried a bunch of other randomizers, but they're all basically giving you Moonlord weapons before Eye of Cthulhu, and that's fun just once. With Sane Randomizer mod, the meta is thrown away and you need to discover which items are now amazing and which items you're used to are no longer worth it.
For example, the most recent time I played it, Merchant was selling somewhat buffed Demon Scythe right away, which is a really powerful weapon for early prehardmode, but not exactly easy to use (it's quite easy to use against bosses as their movements are predictable, a lot less so against regular mobs). But there was basically no way to get torches or gel, so I had to through a lot of hassle to manage light to look for heart crystals and other exploration loot. All summoner whips, armors, and summons I normally use got nerfed, so I couldn't use any of that, and I had to look for other playstyle. It was really fresh, somewhat easier than normal game, but not broken like other randomizers.
I really enjoyed doing playthroughs for every class. I got to seriously use some weapons I glanced over in my first playthrough, find a LOT of new favorites, and experience the game in a new way. Because different classes have their own gear found in different places, the progression itself feels completely different with every playthrough You don't even have to play through the whole game; think of a really neat weapon you haven't used longer than a few minutes, make a build for it, and give it a spin. You might find your new favorite weapon on accident

Step 1: just play the game
