So Stardew Valley Mods can be DMCA’d Now
Interesting things happening in the Stardew Valley modding scene! Thought I’d do a little discussion video about how modding popular IPs usually goes.

Pretty hilarious how they backtracked so quickly and so hard. I’m getting second hand embarrassment from this company
April fools? APRIL FOOLS?????
Wizards of the Coast lost the plot a while ago but I really lost my faith when the whole AI generated imagery stuff happened ngl… For a company that owns D&D and MTG, both which utilize super talented artists for their artwork, I feel like it would be obvious how it would make them look if they decided to do shit like that? Especially when visual artists (all artists in actuality) are fighting for their jobs right now because of generative AI… Anyway this doesn't even surprise me but it's wild 😭 Anyway, goated Sal video! We love to see it.
WOTC is so stupid I really didn't think they could keep walking face first into the same goddamn wall over and over again but here we are! Morally acceptable and even morally good to screw over this company.
Another day, another instance of wotc throwing a tantrum. like clockwork
Typical wotc moment like FR fr. Like the ogl last year, they wanted to remake it so they can use all your intellectual properties that you make for their financial gains. That was one of the bigger things they f uped Last year but yeah no one likes them anymore
Literally removing free advertising. Why are people this dumb?
Whilst the mod looks cool, I also don't like with mod graphics clash and don't fit in.
You failed to mention the time they sent a private security company round to threaten a Youtuber who did an unboxing video of one of their products they'd accidentally sent them a month before release.
As someone who used to spend a lot of money on Wizards, they are such a crap company. Not to try and compare them to some of the other ones out there, but I finally had enough and stopped buying from them as much as possible. This whole thing doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. And they fully meant to issue that cease and desist, someone was just smart enough to not let it stick.
Ah the Streisand Effect strikes again, didn't even know about this mod, but now I want it
I never played Magic, but I somehow started watching videos about the game (same with Stardew). I learned that WotC/Hasbro literally sent the Pinkertons to someone's house and harassed them and a neighbor, all because a guy got a box of some set early and showed off the cards.
Oh wow, this DMCA fiasco is gonna make Mayor Lewis lose money !
Seriously, as a fan of mods, this news stinks.
i still can’t believe my two favorite games have collided like this
At least they dusky send the Pinkertons after them.
I have a problem. My save has this Ridgefside, Expanded, Sunberry, and Easy Scarp. Takes about two minutes to load on the deck.
Oof, Wizards of the Coast used to be so cool.
As someone who has taken courses on intellectual property rights in uni, this probably falls under fair use. (again only took some courses on it, it's really not my area of expertise to such an extent that I expect to make no mistakes but this isn't that complex of a case)
It is non profit, so succeeds on the first factor. Does not succeed on the second factor as it does use creative expressive elements of the work, but this is not really usually an issue in modern copyright cases. It really does only use what it needs for the work, the dialogue, character models and stuff are not lifted from the game, it simply only takes the characters themselves, so it probably succeeds on the third factor. And it really doesn't seem like this existing devalues baldur's gate in any way so it certainly succeeds on the fourth factor.
Succeeds on 3 out of 4 fair use factors, and fails only on the second which rarely poses an issue when it is the only one failed on.
Of course this doesn't really matter unless the mod creator actually takes them to court, and no mod creator is gonna wanna challenge a company worth hundreds of millions. Which is one of the big issue with copyright in the internet era in my eyes. A massive mega corporation can just decide something is illegal copyright infringement, issue a DMCA, and then usually get away with it even if they are wrong because the system isn't designed in a way where a smaller creative really has a chance to win in a dragged out expensive court battle against them without going bankrupt. The system is designed for conflict between companies, not for conflict between companies and individuals.
Gosh why would we want to entice new players when we could be totally unlikable instead?🤗
Glad they saw how stupid their behaviour was.
Maybe we should form an action group and dmca all fascist machine generated slop on nexus. Ive been trying to harrass them by email with no luck.
weird day to post this
