I just put something in there, completely forget about it, and go back at the end of the season when I randomly remember there's stuff in there. Then I plant new things, and the cycle continues

I start with ancient fruits on the left and coffee on the right, then gradually replace coffee with ancient fruit.
Another thing is that you can use the greenhouse to speed through mastery points. If you fill it with starfruits and use the best speed-gro you have, you will rush through those points.
Ancient fruit does not give that many XP, I don't think there is another crop giving you farming or mastery XP as fast as starfruits, particularly if you can grow it really fast.
