Terraria’s WORST Mechanic
Terraria is a great game. Like seriously, one of the best. But let’s be honest, it’s also really annoying sometimes. So today, I want to rant on about one of the worst mechanics in entire game. Something that makes me question why even exists. Biome spread. I don’t know who came up with this idea. I don’t know when it was added. All I know is that it sucks and it’s one of the most frustrating mechanics I’ve ever seen in a video game. Now, to be fair, balance spread isn’t really a problem in preh hard mode. It’s super slow. It barely moves. and it doesn’t spread underground at that stage. It’s more of a minor inconvenience than anything else. But then you enter hard mode and everything changes. The moment you beat the wall of flesh, the game hits you with a giant middle finger. Suddenly your world evil, corruption or crimson starts spreading like wildfire. And now it’s not just on the surface, it’s spreading underground fast and everywhere. Hormo starts to feel like less progression and more like a punishment. You spend more time stressing about evil spreading than actually exploring or have fun. And here’s where it gets really frustrating. With the addition of pylons, Terraria encourages to spread your NPCs across world, even reward you with fast travel, which is super useful because the game has no other quick way to get around. But if the corruption creeps too close to your NPC houses, they leave. Poof, gone. Your pylon becomes useless. Suddenly, you’re stuck in this awkward position where the game wants you to spread everything out, but also actively punishes you for doing it. Like, make it make sense. The only way to deal with this early on is to dig a massive trench straight down to hell, right next to whatever area you want to protect. And yeah, it works, but it’s also one of the most tedious and boring things you can do. Eventually, after beating mechanical bosses, you unlock the contaminator, which helps, but even then, it’s not a perfect fix. Cleaning up the corruption still takes tons of time, effort, and grinding for materials. It works technically, but is not fun. The real issue here is that there’s no way to manage balance red early on. And honestly, if you need to use an external program like TEedit just to fix your world, maybe it’s a sign that the mechanic itself is kind of broken. Balance red doesn’t feel like a cool challenge. It feels like the game punishing you for want to play at your own pace. Want to take your time exploring? Too bad. Your snow biomes get eaten your life. want to build MPC towns for pylons, better hope the corruption doesn’t sneak up on you. Some people defend biome spread, and that’s fine. But I think most players would agree that at the very least, it’s way more of a hassle than it should be. If Terraria added biome spread today, out of nowhere, people would 100% just be asking if to be toned down or removed. It’s not the end of the world, sure, but it does get in the way of just enjoying the game. Anyway, that was that was my thoughts on Biome Spread.
