I want to point out that Old One Army gives very good mixed summonner armors. Valhalla is fantastic, second highest defense after melee and buffs to both melee and summon as well as buffs to balistas and sentries in general.
The non-tavernkeep summoning armor should provide more defense. Between the addition of whips, and most summons having strangely short aggro ranges, summoner arguably has to be closer to the enemy than even melee most of the time. They should not be so ridiculously fragile. I don't think they should be overly tanky, as you can still just not use whips and focus entirely on dodging, but if Re-Logic wants summoner using essentially melee weapons, maybe give summoner just a tiny bit of that melee defense favoritism
When i started playing i also thought summoner was bad. But nowadays, after doing master mode+ runs using exclusively one class per run, summoner became my favorite. Its not as powerful as ranged in the early game, but its definetly miles ahead mage in pre hard mode overall. And when hardomode starts its the best thing ever, when im playing with no (self imposed) limitations i always go summoner because i can skip all the ore grinds and other stuff. Also using OOA armors you negate all the problems with defense(trading a little bit of damage of course) and the sentry balistas melt a lot of bosses.
The diversity of summon weapons is pretty bad, and I know it's because the class is newer than the others, but that doesn't mean it isn't a problem. There are a grand total of 9* sentries in the entire game. of those, 4 come from the tavernkeep and 2 from the moon lord. *I'm counting the 3 tavernkeep sentry tiers as 1 sentry. Whips are not much better, with also only 9 of them in the game, but at least each whip feels relatively unique. I don't really think regular summons are too much of a problem with this, they have relatively unique forms of attack and there's a decent number of them.
I am aware that the next update introduces more whips, but I personally really hope we see more sentries. None of the pre moon lord sentries feel particularly useful, except maybe the queen spider.
In my opinion summoner is the most fun class to play. At least after late prehardmode. It would be better if it had more variety in weapons other than just summons whips and sentries. Like melee has 5 different subclasses all with more weapons than the summoner subclasses. The point about summoner being noob friendly is just false because of the low defense and I dont think new players are going to go out of their way to get the OOA sets that have actual defense.
I wouldn't say so, it doesn't have as much content sure, but how much does that even matter? Most of the time when you play a class, you're likely using the same few "meta" weapons instead of any of the other dozens of weapons for a class. Plus, it's still fun, and that's all that really matters.
(Also, I kinda feel like using early-game as an argument doesn't make much sense, you aren't getting much specialized gear or accessories early game, everything you get is pretty general purpose, so why not just use the best weapon you can get? I wouldn't start dedicating to a class till around post-evil-boss, since by then you at least have a good amount of options for each class, even if it's still not very specialized till hardmode)
Summoner (not taking Hybrid into account) can be considered the least good class (It's a toss-up between it and Mage), but not for the reasons most people say. First, it having lower defense compared to Mage and Ranger armor doesn't actually make a major impact to survivability contrary to popular belief due to how Defense works in this game, most of your survivability comes from the other stuff like max health, i-frames, health regen, DR and mobility. Secondly, again contrary to popular belief, its DPS (or at least potential DPS) with whips is not actually the highest among the classes most of the time, in fact it's on the bottom half at most progression points. This is most easily noticeable in Pre-Plantera.
Third, it taking more effort & knowledge to use to its potential also naturally makes it less convenient and not as useful for much of the playerbase, the "just focus on dodging and minions do all the work" saying is largely a myth & leads to outright bad performance outside of casual mob farming. Overall you're essentially working harder for often less compared to what Ranger and especially Melee can pull off, making it arguably the worst class with Mage being the only competition. Relatively high floor, but also relatively lower ceiling. And staying on the floor will not really let an average player win in situations like Master Mode, OOA tier 3 in general, Hardcore mode, GFB and so on.
My only issue with summoner is there aren’t really much content for it but doesn’t mean it’s a bad class , when you start building things , summoner is the best because you can focus on the building rather than have to switch to weapon every 5s . Now i would love to have summoner having more interesting way to play , like what if you can command minion that shoot projectile at where you want instead of auto aim or minion that can pick up loot or some synergy if you pair with different minion , etc… i know whip is a good direction but a lot of time i always find myself using other class weapon rather whip.
I personally would only say it is the worst due to lack of options in a playthrough, other than that I think its pretty on par with the rest of the classes.
* summoner has the highest skill ceiling of all classes, with whip stacking, mixed minion builds etc. This basically needs some wiki as game doesn't tell you about immunity frames and other reasons why this is optimal, but if you want to play 1000h+, there's something to learn. * summoner is still totally fine even if you don't bother with advanced stuff, and play very casually. You can keep your distance while doing high automatic damage better than any class other than homing projectiles ranger (mostly very late game chlorophyte bullets). * summoner hybrid is the most viable hybrid build, and you should be running 2 minions minimum whatever you play, and since you do, you might as well spend an accessory slot or two on it, and hybrid OOA armors are pretty good anyway etc. * melee/summoner and ranger/summoner hybrid are easiest ways to play the game, as they cover each other's weaknesses, and provide good mix of safety and dps without requiring too much skill * summoner has the fewest items (summons, whips, armor, accessories), but almost all summoner items are viable. If you only look at B, A, S tier items, it's not really far behind except very early game. What are even bad summon items except for some questionable sentries? * mage is objectively the weakest class, at least you get some variety from it * melee is the least interesting class, but it has high power level. There are so many weapons, but a few like Terra Blade overshadow every other at the same point in progression, so you'll end up using the same ones most of the time anyway.

We got terrian but no hill
Almost 3k, almost there. One final push

Don't forget about sentries!
I saw your poll and just couldn't pick one option
All classes are good imo
We're gonna play the hell out of summoner once 1.4.5 drops 🗣

Despite what yall say summoner is NOT bad, yall just suck at dodging thats why

I really like summoner but I think it would be nice if sentries were good on fights outside the destroyer and queen slime.
Immunity frames are also a HUGE issue for most pre-hard mode summon weapons and that should definitely be fixed eventually.

Can you do what you think the worst class is. Like what is the worst class in terraria vid.
I'd still argue that mage has a much worse start than summoners tbh.

Y’all remember throwing when it was a good class?………same I don’t remember
Summon'er?! I hardly know'er!!!! 🤣
I was a gunman till I properly tried summoner. Now I am a certified slave master.
As a building fan. Summoner is super useful for auto killing the enemies that would interrupt you
hallowed hood vs a metal bucket, that sums up summoner in terraria for me
People call melee the worst? Have they never experiece he absolute power fantasy of post planterra melee?
Some facts:
