How Valid Are Terraria Hot Takes?

a few days ago i asked you guys “what are your biggest terraria hot takes and i got a couple hundred responses and i think it’d be fun to go over them.” obviously some of these will be more reasonable than others but i wanted to ask how valid are terraria’s hot takes starting off with cool_gu guy here plantera isn’t as good of a boss as people make it out to be because most of the fight is just spent circling the boss and to be honest phase 2 is also really boring if i could give this man one thing it would be a true don’t get me wrong it’s still a great boss fight but by no means is it one of the best you do really spend most of your time just circling around avoiding a few projectiles but for the most part doing the same thing over and over and when you reach the second phase as long as you have a big enough arena there is basically no challenge funnily enough i’ve always found the first stage of planter to be the easiest and i don’t think that’s really a great thing obviously the second phase should be well harder i don’t hate planter i think it’s a fine boss fight overall it’s just not one of the best bcubed says “fishing is by no means grindy a casual daily quest each day can get you a nice fishing setup that makes everything fishing related fairly quick and very beneficial.” now i am of the opinion that fishing in terraria is actually a fine mechanic or at the very least people overblow how long or tedious it is absolutely but i would never say that fishing is by no means grindy if you’re just there doing a terraria playthrough on your own fishing can be pretty tiresome i find fishing to be the most enjoyable when i’m in a call with a few of my friends or i’m playing with other people and i’m able to just do something else while i fish fishing is very beneficial but i view it more as like a side thing that you can do if you really need better items rather than a really fun activity in the game terraria’s combat system wasn’t welldesigned in its core yeah i don’t really know how to defend this one the bosses are pretty fun the combat is pretty fun there are a lot of really cool weapons i’m going to play defense here and say one thing i think you could very well argue that terraria’s combat system is really only good on pc it is designed obviously for keyboard and mouse and if you’re playing on mobile or especially with a controller it is a nightmare a few years back i played terraria on the playstation 4 for a few hours and after that i immediately said “okay i’m done with this.” the playstation 4 controls are so bad and i assume it goes that way for basically every other controller because terraria is not made for a controller so in that sense i guess you could say terraria’s combat system isn’t perfectly designed but that’s really the only thing i can give this person golem was cool when he was introduced or at least he was in my little boy’s eyes and his hatchet was the coolest thing ever it’s soul crushing to see him get so much hate nowadays hey i can definitely relate to this one because when gollum first came out i also thought he was awesome all those years ago but if we’re being completely honest in hindsight obviously gollum is not a great boss he has a somewhat cool looking design he has some great boss drops but the gameplay itself is very bad he’s way too easy for when you discover him he is spammy but not a threat at all and in general he really doesn’t offer anything fun i think most of golem’s problems ultimately boil down to the arena it’s just way too small most of the time and because of that golem is kind of balanced around that we’ve already talked plenty about golem on the channel though so let’s move on classes don’t exist there’s no class selection restrictions or anything the community just started hallucinating them as an inherent part of the game especially when it involves falsely believing sticking to one damage type is necessary or required it makes sense as an informal thing to describe builds/play styles but again people exaggerate i totally agree that people kind of exaggerate how important it is to stick with a specific class because throughout the entire game multiclass setups actually work very well if done right with that being said though the ability to ignore sticking to a specific class in terraria does not mean they do not exist i mean it’s literally in the descriptions of certain items some weapons help with range damage some melee some magic some summoner those are the four classes i don’t know man i agree people exaggerate but they’re definitely in the game some npcs are totally useless and totally replaceable pirate die trader etc hey i’m not going to accept any die trader slander around these parts okay he’s actually pretty cool but yeah obviously there are some npcs in terraria which are pretty bad for example the pirate captain and the stylist definitely don’t need to be in the game and i have no idea why they still are i mean i guess they look kind of cool but they don’t really offer anything beyond that one of the biggest problems in this game is the new player experience i’ve tried to get several people in the game but most of the time they quit before the first boss because they don’t have any idea what to do and they keep dying over and over again true true true true i think as time goes by the community will start to completely accept this fact terraria is really bad for new players it’s the kind of game where the second you actually know what you’re doing and you’ve beat the game you’re going to keep playing it over and over again but if you’re new you might just quit before you even realize how much there is to see someone’s either going to have two hours on terraria or 2,000 and very few people are actually in between a lot of players tend to treat the game like a kind of boss rush and really lack an appreciation for exploration building or really getting to know their world people seek efficiency in getting to hard mode and beating moonlord above all so they can sometimes optimize the fun out of anything that’s not directly combat related i love the combat in terraria but i also think it’s worthwhile to take some time making the npcs happy building a base i can be proud of or collecting fun decorations and vanity items the bosses are definitely great but they tend to force players down the track of minmaxing instead of playing the game how they’d really like imo i find it hard to call this a hot take even but i do see what he’s saying and i totally agree people definitely prioritize rushing bosses in terraria above all else and i agree that for most people that’s probably not the way to go i used to play the game in a very similar way but recently i’ve taken a step back focused more on building exploring and getting everything i can in my worlds and trust me i have enjoyed terraria more recently than i ever have before and that’s all of the hot takes for today make sure to leave a comment saying what your hot takes are for terraria or giving your thoughts on what we’ve talked about so far and i’ll see you next time bye-bye

How valid are Terraria’s hot takes? Let’s talk about it.

  1. Sorry for the lack of uploads for the past 2 weeks! I caught something pretty bad and I've been sick for a while. Luckily I'm feeling better so we're back

  2. Dye Trader is useful; you can get a 25% discount from the Goblin Tinkerer by putting him in with the dye Trader and mechanic underground

  3. After playing through my first summoner playthrough with some friends on a expert mode world, my hot take is that summoner is the most fun class in terraria

First of all, I think summoner has a lot more variety compared to a class like melee or ranged, maybe even mage (though I love mage just as much) without having the drawbacks of those classes. Yes, early game summoner is a pain in the ass and you basically have to run another build until you get like the flinx staff or the vampire frog staff (finch is unreliable to find in the early game), but I think the idea of whips are super cool and the hardmode and late-game summons really make up for it. Whips and summons provide some amount of range without requiring huge amounts of mana or ammo, and has way better range than early game true melee weapons. There’s also a clear distinction between prioritizing more summons versus prioritizing more damage and whip output (e.g obsidian vs bee and tiki vs spooky). Summoner might be the only class where I’ve actually thought about what kind of sub-build I wanted to go for. Whips also have the same variety. Some whips focus on damage while others focus on speed and crowd control. Have a high damage summon and want to increase it further? The firecracker is surprisingly viable for a lot of hardmode progression because of the extra damage boost you get. Want a whip that has greater speed and crowd control capabilities? The dark harvest and durendal are fantastic at the point of the game they are obtained in. I’ve actively swapped whips like between the morning star and dark harvest and the kaleidoscope depending on whether I’m fighting a boss or like the frost moon. So many of the summons are super viable in hardmode even past the point of the game they are obtained in. The sanguine staff is one of my personal favorites thanks to its speed and the fact it doesn’t get stuck on walls and in caves. I was surprised by how many options there were to choose as a summoner, especially post plantera. The raven, deadly sphere, and xeno staff are all incredible, even though the xeno staff is definitely the best out of the three. But I think my favorite part of running summoner was the crazy power boost you get post-plantera. All of the sudden, you gain access to way better armor on both the tiki and spooky armor as well as several new accessories and summon weapons that are extremely powerful (necromantic scroll). I watched my dps jump from like 800 to 3000 in the span of a few hours of grinding. EoL daytime and the terraprisma are the culmination of all that struggle in the early game. EoL daytime is significantly more difficult compared to every other boss in the game, yet it is probably more rewarding than defeating the moon lord, because the terraprisma is an absolute beast. It’s kind of like the zenith for summoners, but with 7k dps (which is still a ton) EoL daytime is so skill-based that it feels like an actual challenge with a reward that is completely worth the 10-20 deaths you’ll have. I only managed to beat the boss after telling all of my teammates to fuck off and let me do it solo even with the increased health, and I beat it pretty much first try. Holy shit it was so worth it and is by far the greatest accomplishment I’ll have in vanilla terraria until I get like all of the achievements maybe.

I think that another big factor of summoner being so enjoyable is the way the class is built. Summoner armor defense is pretty much comparable to tissue paper, so it’s far more efficient to concentrate your build on dps and minion output than defense or survivability. I pretty much went for a glass cannon build of all menacing and ruthless, and I mostly forgone items like the ankh shield for more minions unless I was fighting a boss where knockback resistance was important, like the moon lord. Summoner also allows you to focus much more on dodging than aiming, which makes bosses like duke fishron and eol stupid fun to fight. Summoner is probably the class that requires the most skill to get the best use out of it, but even running a summon weapon as a supporting tool is also really nice for the stupid fucking meteor heads and jungle mobs.

So basically, while summoner kinda gets shafted in the early game, I think the hardmode drops and overall progression is what makes summoner now one of my favorite classes despite always running mage and ranger in the past.

Anyways, pls add a post moon lord whip and another early game summon that’s way easier to find than killing flinx or hoping you get lucky finding the finch staff on a living tree re-logic. I’m begging
Also, achievement for daytime empress please, it might be a lil difficult but I think it’s appropriate

Lmk if there’s stuff in my hot take that’s inaccurate about game mechanics or weapons cause like I’m writing ts on a train

  4. I love terraria's combat and I think its super underrated. Its simple but has a crazy skill ceiling, and is just plain fun. Its pretty much the defenition of easy to learn, hard to master and so much can be done with it
Maybe im just glazing but I really like it

  5. My hot take is the the celestial weapons are problematic because there are so many different possibilities of weapons that you could fight moonlord with like the pumpkin, frost moons, duke Fishron, and empress of light weapons but they immediately become obsolete

  6. The game has too many boring weapons and armor sets. I know how critial people are relating to calamity and it's players on the vanilla community – and that's valid – but wholeheartedly belive that the changes it make to the vanilla ore armor sets is a enormous step in the right direction. Not even saying to add it 1 to 1 to vanilla, but the amount of plain or bad gear that vanilla has is at least half of the reason for the minmax people complain about, there's very few max and a lot of mins, so it ends up being the path of least resistance when playing the game.

  7. Hot take: Golem isnt the worst boss, its not that bad: his fight is obviously ass BUT its loot is amazing, and I'll die on a hill to defend the stynger, its just too good for both moons events and tier 3 OOA (and the changes in Legendary foxes all the problems except for the arena size). The worst is Deerclops: the fight in classic is pretty ok because it has a rythm like every other boss, but in expert and so on it gets worse because of the random shafow hands attack, that ruins that rythm, the loot is also trash (except for Lucy and probably Chester, but who is using him anyway because Money Through exist), the only good thing is the ost. It doesnt even get a change in Legendary.

  8. I personally really like rushing bosses in terraria. Especially on some of the higher difficulties/modded difficulties. Mining, exploration and building are fun from time to time but mostly just as an excuse to chat with friends (same way you say you do fishing)

  9. Biome spread encourages the boss rush. It's an actual threat until planter and after that you might as well finish the game.

  10. My hot take is that Terraria is 3d, but the player sees the world in a 2d manner because many things would not exist in a 2d world that exists in terreria. For example, walls and things like workbenches, torches, campfires, banners and more can be interacted with but not collided with, as if the play is walking around it and only touching it if they want to, but we don't see that for we see the world in a 2d plane.

  11. As someone who grew up playing this game on a controller for like 500 hours, I disagree with it being labelled "unplayable" by any stretch of the imagination lol

  12. 0:44 you don’t really need a arena you just need a small space were you could circle around plantera I managed to do it with very little space because well it has a small hit box that you can Easley get around and as long as you have a eye of cathulu shield you should be good.

  13. Hot take: Queen Slime and Empress of Light are incredibly overhyped in terms of difficulty.

Queen Slime’s difficulty relies entirely on its minions, which can be avoided by just walking in a straight line away from it. Even without hardmode mobility, the boss gets cooked by any decent ranged weapon and some platforms in the sky.

Empress’ attacks are not hard to dodge either. They are very well telegraphed and easy to dodge with the mobility you’ll have at that stage in progression. Even in daytime, Empress is easy due to how easily its attacks can be dodged, or even just outrun with a fast enough build.

I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that the hardest part of daytime Empress is killing the lacewing before it despawns.

  14. Classes definitely exist.

Set bonuses and armors are geared specially for them and the 4 celestial pillars each represent one.

Classes are most certainly intentional and I don't think that they're over emphasized. Multiclassing is possible but never optimal. In this game you can be a jack of all trades but a master of none.

  15. I tried 3 times to get into terraria and quit all of them before making it to hardmode. I just felt overwhelmed. I finally gave it another try with 50 wiki searches every hour and within a couple weeks had beat the game 4 different times with all the classes and am trying out more and more challenges. It’s a fantastic game but is tough to get into.

  16. 2:08 honestly I have about 500 hours on terraria on my ps5 and I personally don’t mind the controls. I just tweaked some controls like making jump “x” and to heal “L2” and other than that it seems to me more relaxed than sitting at my computer with a mouse and keyboard with a cursor. I do like the controls on keyboard tho. Makes stuff like opening map much much easier than on console

  17. Honestly if I wanna build and explore I play Minecraft, if I want epic boss fights and screaming at my PC from dying to daytime empress of light for the 2000th time then I play Terraria

  18. 1:53 I’m on both mobile AND console and I’m planning to try laptop soon but if I can beat daytime empress of light EASILY with 300 hours on the game than I’d call myself good at console.

  19. When Terraria 2: Electric Bogaloo releases, i wish they actually do classes like an actual RPG. Since that's what most people want out of the game and there's only so much you can so with 4 to 6 acessory slots.
I see myself stashing away cool acessories like the Deerclops expert skull and the magic carpet because i KNOW the same old Warding Worm Scarf will be more efficient.

  20. Hot take because people usually flip the claims:
Corruption has better gear even if cursed flames are worse; crimson music is better (aside from underground).

  21. Hot take: People like to use "hot takes" as an excuse to comment an idea on how the game should be improved and then everybody's like, "That's not a hot take that's common sense."

  22. 1:58 i kinda have to disagree, while to someone that has been playing on keyboard the controller controls might seem bad or clunky, for me someone who has only played terraria on a controller i find the opposite to be true, while i see the appeal of playing it on keyboard i just don't like it, so in my opinion its just a matter of what your used to honestly

  23. People can play how they want but I do like to lock myself to a class at the start of my worlds, it allows me to more explore that specific class and what it has to offer in all stages of the game instead of swapping classes for certain bosses because one class might be better than another. I think its fun

  24. My biggest Terraria hot take is probably that the Wall Of Flesh is the hardest boss in the game. Sure, in Classic Mode and even Expert Mode, it isn't true, but playing Master Mode a lot has conditioned me to lock in and play out of my mind so that the Wall Of Flesh doesn't take more than three attempts. With literally every other boss at this point, even in Master Mode, I usually chill and have a fun time while maybe taking one or two deaths to Moon Lord because his fight always requires at least one warmup round for some reason. It's just the Wall Of Flesh that I can't seem to get better at without using the Star Cannon to cheese it, which I refuse to do, for context.

  25. For the combat system part, controller isn't bad, you can ofc change the controls but usually I only have a slight difference from the base controls, you just have to get used to it because most games are different with controls

  26. For the part that says that it's hard for new players, I disagree, the guide is there but also most or all bosses can easily be accidentally summoned, just because it doesn't hold your hand doesn't mean it's impossible and also it gives you hints for good weapons and armor, everyone that i know that quit the game didnt say they didnt know what to do, they said it was too hard

  27. hot take: terraria is just a game mostly about fighting, the devs want building to be less and blocks to build is mostly locked behind bosses, like the wall of flesh allowing you to get hardmode items to build (like the hallow). Finally, when you are trying to build and you are very far into the game, bosses can spawn to slow down building, especially in the snow biome with deerclops

  28. I don’t mean this to sound opinionated, but mage is probably the worst class in terraria. It’s not that mage isn’t fun, I actually quite like mage, mage has a variety of weapons that are unique. Problem is, you aren’t encouraged to use different weapons a whole lot, and I just find mana management to be annoying. But I’ve thought of maybe a solution: cooldowns. You could have mage weapons do one fancy attack (or flurry of attacks) and then they could go on cooldown, while they are on cooldown, you could use another mage weapon while waiting for that cooldown to be over, no mana requirements, but it still makes mage unique and encourages weapon variety. (Also, there should be more pre-HM mage weapons).
