Can you beat Stardew Valley using ONLY potatoes?

[Music] Hello everybody and welcome back to Stardew Valley. So today we’re going to be doing a new challenge. We’re going to see if we are able to beat the game. Farming only potatoes. Here, you kind of look like a potato. Why not? Okay, we have our character. Everything is going to be like basically potato themed. First things first, get these. And guess what? Trash. All right, so uh let’s first of all fix this up. We got to clear things up and then we have to go buy potatoes. We have $500. And I’m also going to plant the mixed seeds and if they’re not potatoes, then I will destroy them. But it’s an easy way to get extra potatoes that I can’t afford normally. So, I’ll be trying to farm uh mixed seeds for a little bit at least. We don’t need any of this grass. We just need potato room. And I know what you’re thinking, Paige, you can’t farm potatoes outside of spring. I know. I’m I’m aware. We’re going to be trying to get the greenhouse, but mainly once spring is done, uh we’re just going to sleep through the rest of the year until spring comes back because uh we need potatoes. We can’t make any money if it’s not potatoes. So, what’s the point? All right. Well, I’m running out of energy already, but I should be fine. I’ll scrge around and see if I can find something. Hey, guess what? We can’t sell that. Uh potato potatoes. That’s it. I can only afford 10 potatoes. Dang, that’s pathetic. What kind of potato farmer am I? I guess I don’t have to worry that much about energy cuz I’m not going to have much to do. Shut up, Gus. No one asked you. I’m poor. I have no money and I’m hungry. What do you want me to do? Maybe give me some money or some food or something like you give Lionus. Yeah, that’s right. Oh, great. Trash. That’s That’s exactly what I needed. Oh, thank goodness. Here’s something. Okay, now I’m going to go around and try to see if I can find any more mixed seeds. It’ll be good to have fiber anyway, but hey, there you go. Mixed seeds. And there’s a chance that I can get more potatoes. All right. Well, that took all day, but that is all of the That’s a potato. That is all of the fiber on the entire farm. Ah, you’re not a potato. I’m running out of energy, though. Oh, this is unfortunate. That’s a potato. Let’s water this and this. Five left. Three left. Please, potato. Ah, it’s not a potato. That’s fine. So, I guess, uh, I guess I’ll just go right back to bed. Ah, it’s raining. That means my potatoes are all done. Time to go to bed. I’m just kidding. I’m just kidding. Okay, I’m going to go down to the uh, Cinderap forest and see if I can get some mixed seeds from there, too. Well, that didn’t take too long. I got some snacks for the road and two more potatoes and a bunch more fiber. There’s not as much fiber as I thought, but that’s fine. Yep, this isn’t going to get tedious at all. Day five and I still have zero money. Who’s sending me letters? Shut up, Jojo. Please tell me they’re grown by now. How could you? I can’t even make a scare grow yet, you jerk. Ah, some of my potatoes have been grown. Oh, and I got two out of that. Nice. Ah, level farm up. Level what? Farming level up. Okay, I got to sell these and buy more. I don’t know how much I can get out of them, but um hopefully enough to exponentially snowball this potato effect. Wasn’t there fiber through here? Weird. Really? No mixed seeds? Come on. So, I think the way that I’m going to have to do this is I don’t want to have to go mining and stuff for like sprinkler ingredients. So, I might just have to use my potato money to buy the ingredients for it. Or if I could like buy sprinklers, but I don’t know who sells sprinklers. I think maybe the traveling cart lady. That’s the weed number. Definitely don’t have enough spaces for this. Oh no. It’s already halfway through the month, so it can’t get much worse than this, huh? Not till next year. This one scarecrow is doing a lot of work. All right, we got one more big harvest. I think it takes 6 days for them to grow. So, we have one more this month and then uh I guess I’m sleeping. Oh, but look how many there are. So many potatoes. This is great. Now, the question is, should I use some of the money from my final batch of spring to like buy the Jojo stuff or should I just wait? I don’t know. I’ll think about it cuz then I need more potato money for next year. This is probably not even going to be enough. This is so many potatoes to sell. I’m going to be watering it for so long. And I’m also probably going to need another scarecrow now that I’m thinking about it. I need one coal, I think. I think I have enough everything else. I definitely have enough fiber. Oh, actually, I just dug up some coal from a worm spot. I don’t even need these. All right, buddy. Here you go. Protect my crops. I’m going to go harass Pierre and make him buy like $20,000 worth of potatoes. I sure do love these rainy days. I wish it would rain more. I did try to grow potatoes in real life once and uh the stocks ended up getting like five feet tall, four and a half feet tall and I was so excited, but apparently all of the nutrients went to the stocks because when I pulled the potatoes out, I thought uh I thought there would be potatoes there, but they ended up just being like empty husks. So, um it it didn’t work out. But, you know, I I grew some really beautifully long potato stalks. Oh, look at that. I’m like not even halfway done. This is fantastic. Anyway, like and subscribe or whatever. All right, it’s the day. Ah, so many potatoes. This is beautiful. Oh, I’m going to be able to sell this for so much money. This is crazy. And it’s the last batch of spring. So, what my plan is, ooh, farming level. My plan is and I’m is I’m going to sell all of this and then I’m going to immediately buy a bunch of ores so that I can one make a furnace and two upgrade my watering can because watering every single one of these like bit by bit is a nightmare. So even if I could just upgrade it like once or twice that would be ideal and I’ll have plenty of time to do that because I’ll be waiting around doing nothing till the next spring. It is time. Oh my god, [Laughter] that’s insane. Okay. Uh, so I’m going to buy enough stuff for a furnace. Oh, I don’t have my stones on me. That’s okay. Penny, you got to get out of the way. Who would have thought that oodles and oodles of potatoes aren’t going to make you a million dollars? You know what? I’m now disillusioned by the entire concept of Idaho. All right, I’m going to clinch now. I need to get five more for my watering can, five more gold ore for the watering can. And um Oh boy, I’m going to need a lot more gold and iron for the sprinklers. Should I buy more than that? I don’t know. Also, I’m aware that I could have upgraded my hoe, but that would have cost more money and they’re, you know, that being more time also. So, I don’t even have enough for a sprinkler. I have to go to Clint’s. It’s 11:00 a.m. and I haven’t even gotten done hoing my stuff. I mean, I guess the watering is not going to take that long. We’re gonna buy We’re gonna buy 500 potatoes this time and they should be done before the end of the month. This will be my big my last big one for the year and then I’ll buy a bunch of stuff. The sprinklers are going pretty well. I don’t have very many, but you know, I’m slowly working on it with my single my my single furnace. All right, final harvest of the year. Once I sell all these, I should be able to get a huge head start on next year and also get a golden watering can. and that will seriously help. That’s been the real bottleneck is the sprinklers and watering cuz it takes so long and it takes so much energy. I don’t quite have enough mushrooms to plant more than this because I won’t be able to have enough energy to water them every day. Obviously, the sprinklers are helping a ton, but there’s only so many you can get, especially with these crazy prices. Probably should have planned this out better and bought more ore in the first year because there’s a huge price hike in year two, but you know, hindsight’s 2020. I’m just happy I’m making decent money with potatoes. Please be a good payday. Today’s the day. This was all clear yesterday. This is the year we’re going to get everything paid off in just a couple of giant potato payments. Also, I lost two of my sprinklers while I was sleeping apparently. So, that’s, you know, tens of thousands of dollars down the drain. But whatever, I’ll live, I guess. Very sad about it. Very upsetting. So much of this playthrough would be saved by just doing basic math, but you know, it’s just it’s just not what I want to do. Okay, so I literally it took me all day just to plant them and to till all the soil. Oh, I missed one. There we go. And I still have 42 left. I bought 650. And uh this is this is where we are with it. It’s it’s a pretty big field. I think it’s it’s a lot of potatoes. Okay, how long is it going to take me to uh water these? All right, here we go. We’ve got everything watered. It’s 5:00. I think I got everything watered by like 3:30 and it’s all surrounded, so it shouldn’t get eaten up by the weeds. I don’t know. I’ll keep, you know, cutting them back just in case. But oh, sorry, dog. He’s stuck in there. I got to water all these now. Darn it. All right, first big haul done. Let’s pick all these and sell them. And then I’m going to buy more potatoes. And again, I think I think this is the year we should be able to finish the whole community center this spring. I definitely could have finished all the JoJo bundles before now if I wasn’t so strict with like my no mining policy, but you know, it it’s it’s just fun. It makes it even more fun cuz then I have to water hundreds of more potatoes. Big payday. I literally only need 30,000 more. This is great. All right, I planted about 550 and I don’t have to water them today. Thank goodness. I’m going to water them tomorrow. Please, I don’t want to water them tomorrow. Please, Rain. Darn it. You guys have no idea how lucky I just got two rainy days in a row and then today they’re all done. Oh my gosh, I’m so excited. This is great. This might be my last harvest ever.   1. You could have used the off-season to cut down trees and craft field snacks to fuel all the watering you had to do, before you were able to craft sprinklers. This was a fun challenge to watch!

  2. I wonder how much being on the forest farm would've helped in that first spring, or investing in fertilizer early on at least. Then probably getting the greenhouse and enough potato seeds to run through the year growing things. You could also do the forest farm and use the mini quarry to not spend a billion gold on ores but that lowkey feels against the spirit of the challenge

  3. Fun Fact: If you drop some of those copper nuggies at the farm and then pick them back up again, Clint will show up as if you'd gotten it from a rock on your farm~

  4. 18:00 you could have bought the greenhouse and a couple potatoes for the greenhouse. This would be enough money to buy more potatoes from the night market on winter 15 (2 harvests before spring year 3.) Spring year three you should have bought as many potatoes as possible from Pierre and put potatoes in the greenhouse year round instead of sleeping for next spring.

    You can buy perfection waivers for 500k each which give 1% perfection each.

  6. I assume buying potato seeds one at a time is intentional, but on the off chance you're not aware, you can shift click to buy stacks of 5 and ctrl + shift click to buy stacks of 25.

  7. There's an automated watering mod which massively helps the tediousness of mass watering. Your player still physically moves and waters each spot, refills, uses energy etc.
    I don't think anyone would begrudge you using it for this sort of challenge if it helps insanity haha.

If I had a nickel for every time a youtuber playing one of my favorite video games decided to devote a significant amount of time and energy into farming potatoes and consequently descended into potato madness, I would have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

  11. Fun video, potatoes are superior! A small tip that can make your life a lil easier in future in case you don't know, you can hold shift and click to buy 5x items at a time, ctrl + shift and click to buy 25x items at a time, or Ctrl + Shift + 1 to spend all your money basically (a stack of 999)!! 😄🥔
