MINECRAFT JUST COMPLETELY OVERHAULED THE NEW SHELVES + IS UPDATING WATER

Well, hello everybody. My name is Wiplier. Welcome back to another Minecraft update. Minecraft just made the shelf block way better. Vibrant visuals might get way spicier, and a bunch of other updates inside of the new summer update. Well, update. Gently, myth, the legend, Smokeoky Stack. Fresh off of the heels of an exciting beginning of Snapshot season for Java Edition, we’ve got a new preview this week, and it’s kind of weird. One of the biggest things that Smokeoky Sack was able to find inside of the new preview is a bunch of settings for brand new graphics. So, what’s new here is, I believe, everything that is highlighted in this thing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we have our default graphics profiles. That’s fine. That’s cool. But then down here, we have something called atmospherics that you can enable or disable. We’ve got something called edge highlight that you can enable or disable. Bloom, upscaling, terrain, shadows, fancy water. No, super fancy water at that. So, of course, we knew that vibrant visuals was going to be an ongoing process. Like, they were going to continue to make upgrades, but what the heck is super fancy water if this is how the water looks and vibrant visuals already. Like, I mean, I won’t be complaining if we get water that looks even more beautiful. But it’s already so stunning looking with all these fancy little water things down under the ground. I guess you never know, though. Super fancy water could be in vanilla Minecraft. Well, like nonvibrant visual vanilla. I don’t know. It’s weird. And I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of surprised to see them making or maybe preparing to make something that sounds so relatively significant to all before Minecraft Java Edition has even a taste of Vibrant Visuals V1. But I mean, hey, I’m not complaining here. Not in the slightest. More beautiful water when it’s already so stunning. Mama, yes, please. Now, this preview that dropped is actually surprisingly small. Compared to the Java edition snapshot that just dropped this week, the change log is nowhere near as long. Sure, sure. Java gang had to play a little bit of a catch-up. But I mean, I guess it’s interesting. It does make me wonder as to where we’re at when it comes to this fall update. Like, are there still going to be more features? I’ve got a little theory, but we’ll talk about that later on. For now, one of the biggest focuses of this new preview. Oh my god, it’s the amazing new shelf block. We’ve got a bunch of different changes here. Oh, mama. The beautiful sounds that we were talking about in the Java snapshot. They’ve made it over. Now, I was just testing a bunch of this stuff on stream yesterday, and I found another new sound that is beautiful. Take a listen. Oh my god. When you power the shelf, it sounds like a bass drum or something when you power or unpower it. Oh my god. And then when you move a bunch of items into the shelf. All right. Well, that’s the same sound as when you put one item into the shelf. It’s nice sounding. This sound though, that might just be one of the best sounds in the entire game. That sounds good. Now, actually, I didn’t even realize it at the time, but in this week’s snapshot, this shelf, it actually got a bunch of beautiful big upgrades that I didn’t even realize. And inside of this week’s preview, for the most part, all of those upgrades are here as well. So, today I’m going to do something a little bit different. We’re talking about the preview for the most part today, but I’m going to show off the shelf changes over here on Java Edition. Just it’s hard to explain, man. I just like how it feels. Shelf upgrade. Numato Uno. Oh my god, it’s beautiful. The shelf block. Every single one of them. You can water log them. When you water log them, you might be wondering about the back of the block. Well, there is no visual change going on over here. It’s only on the front of the block. And as you can see here, the water can definitely spill out of the shelf as well. Powering or unpowering the shelf will not affect the water log status of this shelf. You can water log it all just the same. Next up, take a look at these two blocks because oh my god, a Magdalina Bay reference. Ah, yes. Again. Okay, so hopper dropper. These things are the shelves brand new best friend because you could take a hopper and funnel items right into the shelf. Now, you take a look at that. Now, how this is going to work here is when you funnel something into the shelf, it will always start by filling on the left hand side and move over towards the right. If we funnel items into the shelf that are different, then of course they’re not going to sack. However, if I funnel hoppers in, and let’s say maybe they’re all three are hoppers. Well, if I check the hopper thing right here, there is nothing inside of it. But if I take the hopper off the shelf, well, I will have three hoppers inside of my inventory. If you already have things in two different spots in the shelf and you add a little bit more to the shelf, well, then it’ll figure it out on its own and throw things into the middle when you have a shelf placed out. And then maybe let’s say inside of a hopper you had a lot of things. They will transfer out of the hopper at the same rate that items would move from one hopper to another or be transferred into a chest as this hopper begins to fill up the shelf. Well, let’s go ahead and do this. We’ll add a little bit more oak planks to this thing and then we’ll come back later on and check on it. Next up, let’s take a look at this because with the dropper here, if I have a dropper facing the shelf, I could actually do the same exact thing but in a little bit more of a controlled situation. When I power the dropper, I will drop one item clean into the shelf here. And that’s how it’s going to work. Every single time I power the dropper, you can move things in one by one. It’s kind of beautiful. But what if I had a shelf and I had a dropper looking at the shelf, but they weren’t quite touching. Well, take a look at this. Because if I throw items inside of the dropper and then power it, well, it will still be able to add things to the shelf, even if it’s not physically touching it. It just is looking at the block space in which the shelf is occupying. Now, unfortunately, this is just like the chisel bookshelf where in survival Minecraft on the back side of the block, you can’t interact and take items out. So, it’s not going to be like a super secret block that you can pull things out of. And unfortunately, it’s not even going to work on the side of the block either. You need to actually be looking at the slot in which the item is actually inside of to be able to take it out. So, that begs the question though, what about the side of the block? If I had a dropper on the side of a block here and I power it, well, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it will always fill from left to right and it does not matter. If I had an empty shelf and the dropper is on the right, well, no, look, seriously, it doesn’t matter. It always goes from left to right. So, we got a little bit of predictability going on. As you might have figured with that dropper functionality, if I had a hopper, same thing. Like looking at the block, but not actually touching it. It will work all in the same the same exact thing if I’m moving things in from the side or the top. But what in the world may happen if I had a hopper below this? Will we be able to pull items out of it? Well, okay. Well, oh, I forgot that you put a bunch of items in. I thought it was going to say it was broken. No. Yes, of course you can. I put one item in there. It’ll pull items on the left out first and then move over to the next slot and start pulling those items out as well. And eventually, boom, it pulls a full stack out and the shelf is now empty. Hoppers can empty it. Now, speaking of hoppers, let’s slide over here to this one. It’s been running for quite some time. We take a look at it. The hopper has filled up the entire shelf right here. When I take an item out, if I have a different item queued up, it will slowly start to fill up even more with whatever was queued up. Basically, if you’re familiar with hoppers and droppers, this is all very familiar functionality, but brand new shelf functionality nonetheless. And just to be clear, on Bedrock Edition, this functionality has all made it to the game as well. Brand new to Bedrock this week, the shelf will actually work with hoppers and droppers. I do like on bedrock how the items are a little bit larger though. Feel like that’s how it should be on J. Oh wee. Now over here I have the shelf hooked up to a comparator. This is the functionality that we took a look at not too long ago and it didn’t work. Previously you see comparators and shelves did not work. But now well now dare I say this might be one of the most complex redstone things in the game. The shelf when hooked up to a comparator is a binary reader. All right. So check this out. This is how this is going to work. Here I’ve got a shelf hooked up to a comparator and a red zone line with lamps here. So we can see the signal. When I put something in the leftmost slot, so like the first slot of the shelf, I will get a redstone signal outputed of one. So slot number one is one. That’s easy enough. Slot number two right here, that is going to be two. If I have something in just the second slot, a redstone signal of two. Where things start to get a little bit hazy is redstone slot number three right here. because when I put something in the third slot, I actually get a red zone signal of four. But what’s going on here is actually really simple to understand. If I go ahead and take that out, I’m back to zero. If I have something in slot number one, that’s a one. If I put something in slot number two, that would be a two. So, if I have these two slots filled, that’s how I get a three right here. All right, so that’s how I make a three. This is a one. This is a two. If I pull my two out, I go back down to one. Now, there’s quite a bit of numbers here, but keeping in mind that this third slot right here was a four signal. Well, if I add something to this, this should be five. And sure enough, 1 2 3 4 5. We have a signal strength of five with the items placed in the table. Just like that. So that would mean if I go ahead and pull these things out, I made three by doing that. I can go ahead and place one right there and place one right there. And now I’ve gone ahead and made myself six. If I add one more to this, this is going to be seven. Seven is going to be the maximum signal that you can pull out of this thing. And yeah, you can play around with the different block combinations here to get different numbers 1 through seven popping up here in signal strength. I hope that makes sense. Maybe I explained it in a way that you could like wrap your head around it. I don’t know. It was a little confusing to me at first, but but at least me, I get it now. So, we have a random signal of two in the middle. This one should be four. I put them together and yeah, that’s six. Now, you might be wondering here, if I put an item in this slot that is just one item, what is my signal? Well, that’s one. If I put a stack of items in this first slot, what is the signal? Well, that is still one. It’s not reading how many types of items are inside of a slot. It’s just reading if there is something in a slot or not. Now, to the functionality, it’s the same on Bedrock Edition, but there are some issues, at least on Bedrock Edition right now. One of these issues has to do with the orientation of the shelf. The other issue has to do with comparators not reading shelves through blocks currently. Oh, dude. It’s all like secret doors and little codes and activating things or whatever. Maybe you would have to put like, I don’t know, this and this inside of it. have a signal strength of five and then all of a sudden a door could open up. And keep in mind that you could of course have multiple ones of these. You could have all the way up to like well I guess an infinite amount, but even if you had like two of them, then you would need maybe a five. And let’s say maybe on this one we wanted a signal strength of three. So we had to do something like that. Yeah. Once you wrap your head around this redstone locking mechanism and all of this stuff, you could make some pretty advanced locking and secret doors. Redstone Wizards, if I butchered something there in the explanation, please, please correct me down below. Next up, the shelf. The shelf is made out of wood, which will mean tragically if you put fire near the shelf in time, the shelf can definitely catch on fire and burn away. That is, unless the shelf is made out of hay or whatever you call this weird netherwood, this stuff will now no longer ever burn in your game, it’ll live forever. And when the shelf is burning, you saw it really briefly there, but the fire looks a little derpy. Meanwhile, the other flammable shelves, well, put them inside of a furnace. And yeah, you could use the shelf as furnace fuel. And take a look at this. It seems that the furnace fuel has a shelf. I mean, well, it’s not really good. You should probably just build with the shelf, but I could smelt almost two items with one single shelf block uh until I fail. Now, as we checked out in the snapshot video this week, one functionality that is not there on Java for the Shelf is being able to move this thing. Is it still here on Bedrock Edition? Well, oh yeah, this week on Bedrock, you could still move the shelf. Obviously, there you can push the shelf, which means if you get a little bit more sticky with it here, yeah, you could pull the shelf as well. Man, Java needs this functionality. Also, does this not look like a claw or something? Like, that’s really, really cool looking. I wish it would work like that on Java. Also, on Bedrock, you were wondering if items were inside of the shelf and I was moving it, will they stay? Yeah, they’ll be a little bit glitchy looking. Like they pull in and out of the shelf, but they absolutely do stay inside of the shelf. It’s so cool. So, as a Java man, I kind of hate to say it, but this shelf is slightly superior on Bedrock Edition with bigger items and moving functionality. What do you think about these new advanced shelves, though? Fire. Next up, blocks. Mojang is always working on making blocks more advanced nowadays. But it seems again inside of this preview, it’s happening again. Thanks to our dear friend Smokeoky Sag, we know that Bedrock might be getting a multi-colision box for custom blocks soon. So I believe here what this means is for example the piston. When I power this thing, it takes up more than one block right here. Well, that will be possible with custom blocks very very soon. Basically, a collision box is like essentially what you collide with when you have a block. And seeing as this piston is two blocks tall, now I have a multi-block collision box. It’s in the bottom block. It’s in the top block space right there. A better way to show this off is maybe collision box right there and collision box right there. However, when I unpower this thing, the collision box is only in the lower block. Basically, it’s all functionality for blocks to be able to be added to the game that are a little bit larger than block. Of course, these changes, they always could be just for creators, but also if creators can do it easier, the devs can, too. Now, inside of this week’s preview, they went ahead and done it to Bedrock Edition. This update is at exactly the same spot as Java is now, which means brand new beautiful oxidized lightning rods. Oh my god, they’re so wonderful. And they’re way brighter on Bedrock Edition, too. Look at how good these things look. Now, what I’m curious about is if in Thunderstorm on Bedrock Edition, do the lightning rods do the cool little animation that they do on Java? Ah, they do. They have this little particle shine that happens from time to time. Oh, it’s so cool looking. I love how these lightning rods look. And then we o actually Oh, have oxidized ones now. That’s so sad. You can see the lightning isn’t deoxxidizing them, though. Now, attention to detail, gang. You will also probably take a guess that copper horse armor has made it over here, too. And well, if that was your guess, yeah, you’d be 100% correct. The copper horse armor has indeed made it to the game as well. Your horse can be way more coppered out than ever before. And this is a clean. It’s a good looking set of armor. I love this copper horse armor. It’s so nice looking, but I think we should be able to craft it. So, this is how I think about it over here. Copper horse armor is going to be a little bit less good than iron horse armor, but slightly better than leather horse armor. We can craft leather horse armor. So, why not take the same crafting recipe and be able to craft copper horse armor, a slightly better version of this stuff. Then, from that point on, if you want to get even the better horse armor, maybe you need to go out into the world and actually explore and find this stuff. On a different note, did they actually add the copper horse armor to any of the structure loot tables, or is it just unobtainable? And last but not least, for today at least, what we’re going to talk about is technical changes. We have so many different technical changes that have crept their way into this week’s preview, including what seems like a gigantic fix for custom biomes, if you’re making those. But I have myself a little bit of a theory. If we are going to get anything else new for this update, I think next week might be an interesting one with maybe hopefully even some hints. For the first time ever when it comes to the fall update, Jabba and Bedrock are in pretty much perfect parody when it comes to the features. So, I guess I don’t know. Only time will tell, but hopefully next week’s snapshot is real spicy. For today though, that’s all I’ve got for you. Smash that like button, subscribe, and thank you all so much for watching today’s video. I can’t believe it’s the end of July. [Music]

  1. for the shelf, how does it work if you've combined them into a singular shelf and try to sort through? I'm wondering if this might work as a simpler multi-item sorter where you feed a line through a shelf then drop down to another? also, if it's connected, could you feed on one side and empty on the other?

  2. REDSTONE IDEA: you have a factory with multiple products but don’t want to go digging through chests SOOOO you have hoppers and a wall of shelves (along with overflow storage) so you can take out the one stack you need. ALSO WORKS WITH FARMS

  3. I hate to be the bearer of obvious news but I don't think anybody on Java edition is sad that they're missing out on Vibrant Visuals when they have access to incredible shaders like Complimentary etc, VV just can't compete with Java shaders.

  4. We can change the way we transport itens down with hoppers (if u dont use droppers), alternating between shelves and hoppers, u can also lock a hopper when there is an item in a shelf so it is more efficient, dont needing to have a lot of blocks inside a hopper

  5. Wattles…the concepts you just unlocked in my brain 🧠 🤯

I'm gonna design a new item sorter.

I wonder if trapped shelves will be used in structures. 🤔

  6. Java doesn’t have vibrant visuals yet and gets other updates later than bedrock is because bedrock is the main version of Minecraft and is much more accessible

  7. Personally I'd love it if they removed the ability to swim up flowing water and added ropes instead.

Ropes could act like ladders that can be dropped without a wall requirement like ladders, and would act a bit like vines.

  8. Verse of the day
    Joshua 1:8 KJV

[8] This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
    .
    Stay Godblessed

  9. Hail @wattles I'm not sure if you are aware but there is a huge bug in the newest Java update/snapshot. August 1st, 2025. If you mouse click on a silk touched bees nest in your inventory or in a chest, the game completely crashes. This has happened multiple times for me. I'm not sure if this is something interesting for you or your community to test to see if you get the same results, but I wanted to share, because for me, one slot in my hardcore inventory is now permanently consumed by an object that I cannot remove. IE: It will crash the game if I try to click it to move or transfer.

  10. The shelf getting pushed/pulled by the sticky piston with another block inside the shelf made me think of the xenomorph inner extrendabke jaw with the way it pops forward for a second.

  11. I hope they revert the change that Copper golems no longer sort by NBT. Eventhough it's easyer to rename an item to make blocker items (and fortunaly sorting doesn't depend on durability for tools/armor), this change removes the ability to sort enchanted books by their enchantment or pottions by their effect. They were also able to sort shulkerboxes by their content which was already possible but way more complicated. Therefore I think they should sort by NBT but ignore durability and only match the total number of items for each item type in a shulker box.

  12. Holy cow i havent seen a wattles video since 1017-2018 when you had 100 or so subscribers back then i was Fdny125. If im not mistaken im still on the old subscriber board if that map is still in existence

  13. Ok potentially crazy idea, but with the copper golem and the shelves being clearly a storage type update, if the shelves when powered and above a dropper kept the last item in a stack from being removed you could potentially make a compact item filter that filters 3 items at a time? Not quite sure how or if it would actually work but sounds great conceptually
