simple solution: make your diamonds look like lightly weathered cut copper stairs
Imagine if you implemented a 0.1% chance of playing creeper charging up sound upon using crafting table or opening the chest!
glow lichen that when far away looks like diamond ore but as you get closer it fades into the glow lichen texture.
I don't have this problem and I'm glad :3

I've refused to believe this actually happens to people, but then I got fooled by it too. It only happened once, but that's still more than zero.
Mojang: makes glow lichen only spawn on stone or deepslate
An idea would be to make it only have a chance of turning diamonds into glow lichen and vice versa(like 10%); just to screw with people even more.
