Flails are a great weapon when you first start the game and need a weapon you can use from a distance that keeps back enemies until you get a better weapon. It's especially good to hold back enemies and deal with them in expert/master mode where they deal a lot more damage. Don't diss the flail bro, it has its place in the game.
I use a godly mace or ball o hurt against eye of cuthulu, water of words/crimson brain, and (sometimes) skeleton, but past that point they're only really good for camping out normal enemies.

Flails are good against the eater of worlds, and I'll have to assume you're not including the flairon cuz it has homing projectiles

Tbh i just use the "jump into the enemy and hope i heal faster than it damages me" when using my flail. i do not throw my flail, just flail my flail
