You spawn at the glowstone pillar, and you'll immediately be greeted by a village and two blacksmiths in front of you. I didn't chop down some trees first as the weaponsmiths were selling iron axes for 3 emeralds. There are 4 emeralds in one of the houses. Take them and trade with one of the weaponsmiths to immediately get an Iron Axe at spawn.
