What is my mod?
Well, it’s another skill-tree mod that aims to add progression to Minecraft in a permanent way through the use of skill altars and experience points.
But that's not really the main point I want to discuss here
In my mod, there is a major focus on the data-driven component. I want players and other creative people to be able to contribute to their version of a playthrough easily and shape the mod to best suit them. I figured the best way to make that a reality is to integrate the development of datapacks (which are used to add custom content) directly into the game.
The mod features a developer skill altar that lets you build and test your own custom skills inside the Minecraft client without restarting the game. I showed a few friends, and immediately we all got excited about the idea. Starting with a blank canvas and, together with a few friends, building out a set of skills however powerful or complex you want them to be, before the playthrough even begins is incredibly appealing.
After showing them the built-in editor, they all independently figured out how to create their own skills. And I mean skills with real complexity things that meaningfully change how the game is played. That got me thinking: surely a tool like this already exists for datapack creation. There is Misode’s site (https://misode.github.io/), which I’ve used more than I’d like to admit, but for players who don’t want to learn the precise placement of every file in a datapack, a built-in visual editor would be a worthwhile feature.
What are your thoughts, would you appreciate a tool / mod that let you do this, that adds a custom block to the screen which had intuitive enough screens to allow you to actually build out your own datapack with very little technical Minecraft knowledge? or does something like this already exist?
Also, feel free to test out My Mod and see if the concept is actually intuitive in practice.
