I feel it'd be better to say Minecraft building is expanding. There's new techniques and tools but the older styles are still just as valuable. 😀
I build on the fly. Dirty, janky and plain silly sometimes but I love them. I'll never use lightmatica or creative to plan, just build and have fun.
I struggle with being basically competent at building in Minecraft. I tend to make boxes or dig caves, which are just boxes dug out instead of built up.
I feel like I see the term "block vomit" used as much as a critique of this modern style done poorly as it is a critique of the style as a whole.
It's hard to do it well and some people just spam in random stuff without the full consideration of the colour and hue stuff, and it ends up looking bad from a distance compared to the proper artistic shading effects.
I'm personally really happy with the new styles of building that have come out in this new era. I want to learn them. But I don't think that it's essential to learn them in order to enjoy Minecraft.
While "painting" a build with a focus on the block color and not much regard for what the game presents as material types can allow for more detailed gradients, shading, and such… I think there's something to be said for building using a collection of blocks that make enough sense to be used together material-wise in order to maintain some sense of "immersion" in a vanilla Minecraft survival world. Something like "cohesion" with how the materials are presented in the setting, perhaps…? Looking at the materials you use together in your builds, it seems to me that you probably tend to lean in this direction and do so quite nicely. I personally tend to build in what might be a sort of "Vanilla+" style and that's usually where my personal preference leans as well. ^_^
P.S.
Despite my preference, Bdubs is a delightful minecrafter whose ideas for his artworkful builds have helped inspire me with some ideas that I want to eventually work on building in my own long-term survival world.
Pixilriffs and Python Mc are good and creative builders
I started out on xbox, And been following Hermitcraft since gennyB. One thing as someone who watches them and many others now is you gota remind yourself, " This is their Job. " they do this for 8…10 hours a day. It comes with time and nothing tell you to build a certain way, just your imagination and dedication. I try and take inspiration from everyone i see and build what I can the way I want to. Mc has definitely changed with more options comes with way more creativity.
I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy your content and commentary. Don't change just because everyone else is. Only change if it feels right for you. I also do not have the patience to build like those really detailed builds. I build more like you. You inspire me.
I like this style of building but it is very much made to be screenshotted from a specific angle and distance which is why I will still stick to creating realistic worlds with blocks that make sense for the theme because those styles are great to actually explore and can still look amazing from specific angles and distances. I think the best way to describe it is making clay models vs painting. The clay models are 3d and are meant to be explored from thousands of different angles but the painting is meant to be seen from one angle. I still think both styles are great just like how I think painting and modeling are great.
I have only been playing for just over a year now. At 51 I take my time and not rush anything. I still don’t know how some creators create what they do or in a decent time frame. I look at things with a practical mindset basically is it functional and serves a purpose. It’s like an engineer vers architect and interior decorator.
Marloe I enjoy your videos and your builds, but you also put a story to it as well.
I personally like using some of the newer shading styles and techniques as they come around, but I pick and choose what I like. I play bedrock myself so I don't use axiom or anything like that, that doesn't mean I have an issue with people that do.
Marloe>litematica
I like watching bdubs builds, but in my world, i like walking to travel and this style doesn't look good up close.
I'm really happy there's a painterly movement of Minecrafters, because their art is genuinely gorgeous, but I struggle to call all of them "builders."
A lot of their design principles, like focusing on what blocks look like from far away, makes it seem like their projects exist only for the screenshots and not the experience of it in-game.
Which is perfectly fine to be clear, I love the way they look!! But when I think of builders, I think of people like Marloe or the Hermits whose builds consider more than just how it'll look as a wallpaper. Being an aspiring builder, I'm way more impressed by Marloe's dam than a lot of these picturesque screenshots.
WAIT YOU USED A STAIR IN A WATER WHEEL THATS BLOCK VOMIT
I've been a huge fan of @theikeberg & @hidngem 's building style. I find ikeberg's build & video style is similar to yours. & hidngem's style is very ethereal & she's done some impressive mega projects.
@adventureswithblue101 is a good builder and youtuber
Seed??
People need to stop comparing their builds and start finding what they actually like. LuvstarKei’s channel is an amazing example of a style unique to her, which combines old alpha builds and “girly” color palettes. Personally, I would never build like her, but I have a huge respect for having her own vision and not being “meta”
I am a grandma that plays Minecraft. I love the creative outlet it offers to me and so many others. I've enjoyed watching the evolution of building in Minecraft and I will try a few things out as I see them, but like you, I feel a little left behind. And like you, I'm totally okay with that. In trying to learn and keep up, I realized I wasn't enjoying the game as much. So I went back to just building what I want how I want. I still very much enjoy the pics and videos of those amazing builds but I enjoy the amazing builds of YouTubers like yourself just as much, if not more. Keep up the good work and continue to stay true to you!
all the new builds are just block vomit slop. 90% of the new-gen building channels like wombaat and others just build the ugliest builds and think theyre art
Thanks for the recommendation of these great Minecraft builders
Some thoughts;
– Block vomit exists, it's this new style done so messily that regardless how close or far away you look at the build, it's so incoherent you can't identify what it is you're looking at.
– Even with good builds, sometimes it's indistinguishable from the "magic pictures" where you have to squint your eyes, move the picture backwards and forwards until it becomes a coherent image.
– The logic behind how this building style makes sense, but isn't fully developed. We've gone from big pixel art pictures of mario, to appling the same pixel art idea to buildings and landscapes. But the scale is wrong and cannot be fixed within vanilla minecraft.
– There's a fundamental mismatch between the scale of the player, the scale of textures that accommodate the players POV, and the intended look of a build using block textures. In other words, blocks are too big for the player point of view. "I added some texture to this path" becomes a nonsensical statement when you have random blocks that don't make the path coherent. You're never going to look at this path from a bird's eye view unless you're flying everywhere, and if you're flying everywhere, it kind of defeats the purpose of some of the builds if you've made them with functionality in mind.
It's pretty obvious I don't like this new building style, but it's for these reasons I don't like it. I don't think it does builders any favours. It's like wanting to make something despite it actively inconveniencing you and actively disrupting your vision.
The solution to this building style is to 1) chisel blocks so that you can more naturally mesh textures together. Combined in a block, it loses its original identity and is no longer a block of moss inside your house. 2) A new texture pack is the ultimate solution for this. A texture pack that takes vanilla textures and accommodates the player POV so that you can both make the builds you want but also not work with blocks on textures way too big for the scale of the player. 3) Give blocks in the texture pack block-agnostic names, so that the colours and textures are the only thing relevant, after all the idea is basically painting at this point (and that's great)
It's not that I don't like the building style necessarily, I just think that if some changes are made to actually help players build what they want, we'll see builds orders of magnitude better than what we're currently seeing.
This style has potential, but the game is holding people back.
You have finally put into words what I've been feeling about this style of building. Whenever I see someone building in this style, it just looks ugly to me, and I could never articulate why. Now I get it. It's designed to look good from a distance and follows the rules of 2D art. Which is fine if you're on a server, or are a YouTuber, or post pictures online, but it doesn't work in my personal survival world, since I never see any of my own builds from far away. It's like standing too close to a pointillism painting. You can only see the image by backing away and cannot see the image if you are too close. I'm primarily an explorer in Minecraft, and so most of my builds are spartan and functional. Now that I know why the BDubs style has caught on, I now know that I can confidently ignore it, because it simply isn't for me.
i like watching LegendB too!!
yesssss.. idk i just have a really literalist interpretation of blocks in the game so i hate seeing those type of vomit builds with furnaces for walls or whatever
Isabox is an amazing story teller. I loved the signal series and can't wait to see what else is in store.
I'm with you. I used to be a great builder. Now, by today's standards, I'm for sure not. And I'm slow to boot. The new style is one that I just don't have a knack for
Your video showed up while I was logged out, so I decided to comment here.
Building is actually something that I'd prefer than touching the redstone,
but honestly, I'm a bad builder so I should practice. Good video
Cub fan and Etho s11 build styles are cool. Impulse too
Every builder now tries their hardest to hide the pixel art style of minecraft
Your a pro in my book Marloe
Your style is what I'd call rustic fantasy. Reminds me of Elder Scrolls (at least Oblivion and Skyrim)
Been playing Minecraft since before there were beds in it. I don't use any ressource packs. In old Minecraft the colours were more vibrant which somehow fitted the very limited block palette. I do enjoy those easy types of builds even today. I don't like too much going on with textures before me eyes. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoy what Minecraft is now and use all the new blocks too- just in a more simple way. That's the beauty of it. You can create whatever you want and still appreciate other people's building style. Don't pressure yourselves.
