I think it would be cool if the sniffer could find them but for them to ALSO be craftable while being a bit more expensive (ingots instead of nuggets) so you can get them early game too but if you want a cheap/easy source of them then you can set up a farm later.

I can understand the frustration of the sniffer being neglected but we already have other similar crafting recipes like gold carrots and gold apples that seem to have magical properties. The sniffer should definitely get some more plants that it can dig up but this is not one of them.
Edit: also glistering melon, forgot about that one since gold wasn’t in the name
