I want to follow in the footsteps of u/gurugeek42's amazing List of short, story-driven modpacks.

While I personally prefer modpacks of less than 100 hours, and I'm making this post to also find more… I'm also interested in modpacks like Blightfall and Regrowth, but I've seen playtimes of 200+ hours.

So, while my personal interest is in short, beginner modpacks, I also want to create a list of any other famous modpacks regardless of category, but with playtime listed.

Doesn't have to be exact playtime in hours. I think we can agree 100+ hours is long and less than 50 is short.

Let's start with packs that aren't tech-focused:

🎮 Sandbox Packs (Not meant to be finished)

Modpack Version Description
Raspberry Flavored 1.19.2 Probably the best "vanilla+" modpack that exists, and I don't say that lightly. It truly redesigns the game, replacing bad/annoying mechanics with fully custom implementations. As The Bottom Dweller said: "It's like Minecraft from a parallel universe."
Rebirth of the Night 1.12.2 Also focuses on fixing Minecraft's design, but this one focuses on combat, danger, and exploration. Don't worry, it's not RLCraft. It just makes you actually care about defenses and survival.
MC Eternal 2 1.20.1 If you just want a big modpack with amazing mods, but actually configured nicely together and with a quest book that guides you through all of it, but never forces you to anything.

🏆 Expert Packs (Quests and progression, but NOT focused on tech)

Modpack Version Playtime Description
Meatballcraft 1.12.2 2000+ hours Possibly the holy grail of content. Massive number of mods—adventure, combat, exploration, and tech—all configured to be cohesive with guided, gated progression.
Enigmatica 2 Expert Unofficial 1.12.2 500+ hours Comparable to Meatballcraft in design philosophy, just smaller in scope due to being old and a pioneer (or the pioneer) of expert packs, with the Unofficial version improving many aspects.

Now for the tech-focused packs.

🌱 Short, Beginner-Friendly Modpacks (Tech-focused, but story-driven)

Modpack Version
Cuboid Outpost Luxury Edition 1.20.1
CABIN 1.20.1
Liminal Industries 1.20.1
Rustic Waters 2 1.16.5
Star Factory 1.12.2
Break Out 1.12.2
Digsite 1.12.2
Material Energy 5 1.12.2
Ultimate Alchemy 1.12.2
FTB Academy 1.12.2

FOR BEGINNERS: It seems the consensus is that Cuboid Outpost Luxury is the best modpack for beginners, and that it's pretty short at that, followed by CABIN. But all of the above are said to be short, beginner-friendly, and even story-driven!

Although I personally have strong feelings about FTB Academy and wouldn't recommend it.

📖 Story-Focused Tech Modpacks

Modpack Version Playtime
Blightfall 1.7.10 200+ hours
Regrowth 1.7.10 ???

These are the ones I've seen the most. I've heard Blightfall takes 200+ hours, but couldn't find anything on Regrowth.

⚙️ GregTech & Greg-Like Modpacks

Modpack Version Playtime Notes
StaTech Industry 1.19.2 ??? Uses Modern Industrialization, not GregTech
Nomifactory CEu 1.12.2 600+ hours
GregTech Community Pack Modern 1.20.1 ??? Designed as a beginner tutorial for GregTech!
GregTech New Horizons 1.7.10 8000+ hours The legendary time sink

I might be the most curious about these. StaTech Industry is said to be good, outside of comparing Modern Industrialization to GregTech.

And I'll be honest, GregTech Community Pack Modern, being a 1.20.1 pack made as a tutorial for beginners to GregTech? That attracts me a lot, so I'm hopeful that it doesn't take 8000+ hours like GTNH.

And I'm especially hopeful that that's the case for StaTech Industry.

No, you're coping.

📣 Looking for help with:

  • Missing playtime estimates – The main reason I made this post.
  • More modpack recommendations for any category
  • Corrections or better descriptions to anything I got wrong
