It would be a very sensible starting weapon for summoners to have, yet the drop chance is so low that you might as well ignore its existence. Sure, slimes are a very common enemy, but the time you would have to spend killing them to get this is more than the time it takes to kill yourself for abigail, search chests for finch or kill flinxes for flinx. I just don't get it.

tbh the ~~new~~ bird staff is pretty easy to find, as is the Don’t Starve Flower.

Summoner has a solid start now. Have had abigail and finch for starter summons for a while and now we have a cobweb aswell

king slime can drop it now, but that begs the question of “what to use to get it”
pre-boss summoner is such an annoyingly obnoxious class to play and i dont know why theres not even, like, a summoner item made via wood
Just go for the hornet sstaff. Really good and easy to make
I just started new calamity playthrough and the slime staff dropped form the 3rd slime I killed (I am planning on playing Mage but free dps is free dps)
The whole point of summoner is to be painful atp
Slime Staff isn’t the only early game staff tho, you can explore a Living Wood Tree for a Finch Staff (or straight up start with one if playing on Journey mode) or get a few Tombstones for Abigail’s Flower. Both of these things can be done in like the first in-game day.
Abigail even doubles up as a tremendously powerful early-hardmode summon when combined with Firecracker, she’s able to shred through all of these new hardmode enemies and even Queen Slime for easy Blade Staff acquisition.
They just made it a king slime drop.

I’m actually using it.
I had my Skyblock run blessed and the Slime Staff dropped first day! I couldn’t believe my luck! In all my other playthroughs I’ve never seen it before way into late-game.
the thing with summons is everyone can use one and get a DPS boost. if you have to go out of your way to get a summon item, it atleast adds a reason for the melee and ranged guy to chase something else because they’d be better served getting that instead for their build.

They added the slime staff as drop of the king slime! But it is a low rate, like 3.33%
Honestly I think they should make it a 20% rate or something, but the slime staff is great, I think it is good enough to be at the king slime level and sometimes is even better than the flinx staff by how fast the slimes can attack
I feel like slime staff got power crept. Back in the older days it was a silly interesting hype item solely because of its rarity and it being the only summon before imp. It was added when classes being unviable at certain parts of the game was pretty expected
