It's a really interesting class, but it's lacking almost everything. The lack of accessible summons in the early game, good pre-boss equipment, and even proper armor significantly weakens this class from the start.

Look, I loved the addition of the new whips, but the game still rewards suicide rushing and progression skipping far more than proper class progression. I don't even need to mention the Slime Whip, it only works as a viable option in the Skyblock seed and is completely useless otherwise.

And the new Mushroom Staff? It manages to be worse than Abigail's Flower. This thing is locked behind pre-EoC progression (requiring Tissue Samples or Shadow Scales), which is absolutely ridiculous for only 7 base damage. By the time you can craft it, you already have better options available.

Something that personally irritates me a lot is the lack of decent boss drops for Summoners. Queen Bee? Sure, she has Hornet Staff and Bee Armor, but she's still completely optional. I just skip straight to Obsidian Armor and Imp Staff ASAP, most people only kill her for the Witch Doctor NPC anyway.

And Skeletron? He should drop good summoner gear, but nah, just useless trash that we sell right away. Book of Skulls is a mage weapon, Skeletron Hand is a grappling hook, and the mask is just vanity. The only summoner item is Bone Glove in Expert Mode, which is ridiculous considering he's a mandatory boss that gates the Dungeon.
Why does a required boss have worse summoner drops than an optional one? It makes no sense.

On a side note, I personally hated whip stacking. When you didn't use it, it felt like you were playing the game wrong, like you were handicapping yourself. So honestly? I'm glad whip stacking is gone. The problem isn't that they removed it, the problem is that they didn't compensate Summoner with actual good early-game content to replace what was lost. We needed more viable summons and whips, not a mechanic that felt mandatory to be competitive.

That's just my take on it.

  1. By the way theres 2 whips that by the point you get em, they just ass, i got so happy when i say the slime one, just to be locked behind solidifier, at least i found the web whip, which as a starter is definitly easier than snapthorn and faster than zoologist, of which was the next one, with the leather whip i whent jungle and got snapthorn, by the point i beat both slime king and EoC, snapthorn was better than slime whip and corruption whip, their lack of power fell like they were designed before the removal of whip stacking, of which i think should’ve been kept at like 2 whips at max than full removal, like cmon the terrarian has two hands why no dual wield implication.

Idk, I play master mode and Abigail’s Flower is goated while I’m starting up.

Magic on the other hand is still rng/grind based for startup gear.

I argue they should do what mods like calamity do and give you a starter weapon for each class.

  3. I never felt like I was “handicapping myself” when I just used one whip (which I always did)

Jesus, can people stop complaining about this update? Relogic did a fantastic job and mfers only bitch and complain

  5. I don’t see any issue everyone starts as dogshit melee fighters until they get their hands on ores, ammo for ranger, stars for more mana, armor to actually tank

    It’s part of the challenge

I agree they made some unnecessary changes like the flynx stuff requiring more fur

Summoner is also just a free fire and forget improvement in damage across the board, i don’t get why you’d want to start with it and trivialize some enemies, but also slime staff is pointlessly rare, and gets outshined fast, needs to be stronger and a boss reward for defeating Slime King

Queen bee is intended to be harder than the world evil boss iirc. You’re not skipping TO obsidian, you’re skipping OVER bee armor.

  7. I dunno, summoner is still my favorite class. I do agree with you; the start is extremely rough, but the new whips help immensely in patching holes in the progression. Still could be far better, but coming from someone who tried summoner before it was an official class, it’s come a long way.
