What would you even add to a Stardew Valley 2 that couldn’t be added in a Stardew Valley update?
Abridragon on
Legitimately, Haunted Chocolatier. I would like a game made by CA with all the lessons he’s learned from doing Stardew Valley, but a fresh take on something instead of “here I’ve made a second game virtually identical to Stardew Valley but still different enough that I can charge you money for it”
Not saying ConcernedApe would do that, I just really hate the AAA sequel archetype

honestly, tie-in events to the original sdv – like maybe for an event you could see the townsfolk coming by bus or train to visit. but i love that CA just keeps updating sdv

I’d want it set in another town in the valley, with a new plotline about the junimos/the magic of the valley and new people. I don’t think a sequel set in Pelican Town would be something that people would be happy with. Maybe the plot could involve the war that we’re vaguely aware of? Just the way it’s affecting the world around you…
I’d like a slightly bigger town, too. Still a charming little place, but, yknow, maybe there’s enough people that the corner store can hire a local teen to run the shop on their day off… And maybe there’s a school… Crazy concept I realise!
Something I’d love as well that I’ve wanted for Stardew for a while but that I imagine would have to be hard coded in from the beginning is the ability to matchmake the marriage candidates you don’t marry, as well. Let them get their happy endings even though they’re not with you!
ETA: Generally I’d also love more focus on the characters, their plotlines, their friendships and personalities. It’s the only place Stardew falls short for me, and in a new iteration I’d love to see concerned ape take a leaf out of Fields of Mistria’s book, for example, which has some of the best character work I’ve ever seen in a farming sim. They all feel like real people whose lives progress and change with or without you, who have friendships outside of you that have depth to them. That in Stardew would be the perfect game.

If we did get one, I’d like if you could visit Pelican town as a post-game thing and meet both the og villagers as well as the next generation
Also
-Going to Zuzu City and getting unique crops
-Rival marriages like in the Og Harvest Moon games, maybe with an extra androgynous bachelour/ette that appears after everyone’s taken
-Aliens

CA has essentially said that he’s just going to keep updating stardew forever instead of releasing a sequel and that haunted is a different thing.

I rather have map expansion, optimized co-op, new areas, lore and cut scenes added to this game than a stardew 2. Maybe even a multiplayer mode that multiple people can buy your product, trade and play games together.

I’m pretty excited to see what he does that isn’t in the vein of Harvest Moon. It was really great to see somebody breath some life into that genre with a passion project because HM was pretty stagnant for decades but when I replay Stardew, the farming is the part with pretty much the least variability in how you approach it

Honestly I’m not super interested in another “Stardew Valley”, I think SV is near close to a perfect experience, which is why it’s so beloved and has stood the test of time over 10+ years later and is still very popular.
I think there is probably a point he should stop updating SV though, more stuff is cool, but I don’t want the game to get over bloated with a bunch of stuff that ends up kind of retroactively hurting the overall experience. But I have no issues with basically anything he’s added over the years, so I don’t know when that would happen, but its kind of like how George Lucas kept editing and re-editing and adding stuff to Star Wars, at a certain point it’s probably like… okay time to move on.
I don’t even think we’ll see Haunted Chocolatier in the next 5+ years tbh. It doesn’t sound like he’s actively working on it all the time, more of as a solo passion project with all the knowledge gained. I don’t really blame him either, he’s got the small team, works on Stardew over time, but doesn’t have to work on it so religiously anymore if he doesn’t want to because of how successful Stardew Valley has been. That being said I am more interested in Haunted Chocolatier now then I am for more Stardew Valley updates, because it will build out the world more (takes place in the same world), so we see a different location with new characters and a totally different gameplay style with new mechanics and ideas, and I really enjoy the idea that CA kind of just slowly keeps building out this world more and more, even if the games themselves are different in gameplay style.
I wouldn’t expect a Stardew Valley 2 though, I think if anything he’ll just keep adding to the base game more and more, as that seems to be the pattern so far. Also I’m not really sure what the point of a second game would be, you’d have to do so much of the same stuff again, just new setting, story, characters, it’s not really as interesting as a fresh experience like the original is, and the ‘cozy games’ this game inspired over the last 10 years are clamoring for the insane success Stardew accrued over the years simply by being a great game in nearly all facets of its design.

If CA made a Stardew Valley two, I’d love to see a past/future version of Pelican Town.
For the past, it’s George, Evelyn, Lewis, all the older members as teens/young adults.
For the future, it would be if the farmer has never moved in and all the individual couples (Abagail and Sebastion, Alex and Haley, Maru and Harvey, Emily and Shane, Sam and Penny, and Leah and Elliot) have all gotten married and had kids, plus a few new townies.

If there needs to be a sequel then that’d mean either
A) something big enough to need an entire new *game* rather than update (like moving to another town, the town changing completely or some other thing of that scale)
Or B) it’s to add an active story of some kind, which would be interesting to see!
Along with one of those two it’d be nice to see some new datables (and maybe make some of our older friends datable too…)

I think he should have a chat with the people who made the stardew valley expanded mod. To see how to make it s permanent update to the game. Even if he had to charge $5-10 dollars to make it a dlc. I know many people would do it. There are many mods that could be added like automate, tractor, mail service, etc. That is just me thoughts on it

Big part of stardew apeal is the characters and the setting so changing it a bit maybe with a different story or goal would make it work , and maybe change some mechanics and make it less about farming and more about something else.. like making chocolate in a factory or something…oh wait!

Probably a lot more customizing and some cleaner gameplay in some areas. The game is a decade old. There are certainly a ton of QoL improvements that could be made and have become custom in games of this age. I’d probably like to see more interesting combat, slots specific for tools, weapons, etc so the hotbar isn’t a constant mess.

Even though I think the game is basically perfect as it is…
It would be interesting to see the valley IN THE PAST, maybe right on the brink of the war, or two or three generations before the current villagers. Grandpa is a toddler? Maybe not even born?
Maybe from the beginning you can choose a class (farmer, miner, fisherman, rancher) and have maybe a main and a secondary class so a character can’t be all-powerful and your choices have an effect on the items you can Craft. Having an overall “old rundown town” that you can actually start improving.
