My favorite class is summoner since the introduction of whips in the game, but I'm not the kind of person that searches for "tips and tricks" or something like that when experiencing something new in any game, so as a result I didn't even know that whip stacking was a thing, until people brought it up after its removal in 1.4.5.
Before the update I had done multiple summoner playthroughs, even calamity mod ones, and I never felt something was missing. Summoner was already a strong class for me, even without whip stacking, so it's kinda difficult for me to understand what's so impactful about its removal. Honestly just the fact that it was removed shows that it wasn't an intended mechanic nor a crucial one, so why do people treat it as such?

As soon as 1.4.5 tmodloader release, they will. Added whipstacking mod
because people suck at the game and need to abuse glitches to make it easier
Because it lowers the ceiling for skill expression with the class, and a lot of people don’t like that.
It was really fun and added more uniqueness to the class. Removing it completely takes some of the fun away, if they thought it would be too strong they couldve nerfed it
I honestly didn’t know they’d added whips.
wait, is there a summoner class?
Because 10 salty basement dwellers whine so loud you’d think there are thousands of of them.
I haven’t played terraria in 2 years until this update. This is how I feel since I never played summoner
Whip stacking kinda brought into the limelight an issue with how Terraria’s classes play so similarly. Often times, the way you use a weapon is “point cursor at boss and press left click”.
Whip Stacking gave people something else to keep in mind during boss fights besides dodging, and it was, admittedly, pretty engaging.
The problem is that the mechanic made whips harder to balance, especially with the introduction of the new minion reforges, and the way it encouraged so much weapon switching to get any additional damage made it feel awful to do for anyone that wasn’t playing with a mouse and keyboard.
While I think Relogic should make weapons more engaging to use, it should be implemented in a different way, like how now you can combine the Blue Moon and the Sunfury, or how Yoyos can now be “shot out” with the Rainbow Yoyo String. Then again, maybe they should give some more of those cool reworks to weapons that aren’t melee, lol.
its not a matter of summoner being bad, or people using it as a crutch
hell whip stacking isnt even THAT good at times, its aLOT of effort for just a 30 ish percent increase in dps, if you think people used it as a CRUTCH, you’re SORELY mistaken
its just that players liked to do it since it increased the skill ceiling of summoner, and was a fun mechanic to master i suppose, there was little reason to remove it, although some of the new whip effects could definitely be HELLA op with it
i havent even played summoner, so id like to say im pretty impartial on it, i’ve js gotten my info from a bunch of people arguing about it
also saying it’s “not an intended mechanic” is a paper thin arguments considering hoiks were never intended either, and yet are famously, left in the game cause they’re just fun for those who bother to use them, and don’t effect the average player’s experience (just like whip stacking)
My question was do people really use melee weapons as a summoner class? I usually use a magic weapon backup.
