It was actually first used in half life 2 to denote any objects that didn’t have any textures. they made it very rare and obvious colors so that during playtesting, they could always find them. Mojang just decided to carry on the tradition i guess.

I’ve tried making a design like this before, best I came up with was rotating the design so you can split the banner into quarters with diagonal lines instead, by using the chevron and inverted chevron

purple banner with two black corners or black banner with 2 purple corners. this is a super simple pattern to make if you look at the loom gui
