I do like the blackened fish idea but I'm not entirely sure if it is all that useful in practice. Chances are, by the time you can purchase a bug net from the merchant you will already have gone on a mining trip to collect iron for an anvil, a reinforced fishing rod, and of course a cooking pot.
If you could kill insects to get a very weak "bug guts" fishign bait or something then it could be mildly useful to use alongside the wooden fishing rod as a VERY early way to fish, but the only way to get bait is getting lucky with surface chests or getting a bug net from the merchant.
I've always build pools for fishing far larger than enough just because i like to implement them into environment,to make it looking more natural than just 30 by 10 square of water.
I do not actually calculate how big my fishing ponds are and just eyeball it based on vibes and I guess my ponds are way too big because I catch this all the time
