As much as we all hate on Lewis for being a terrible mayor, it’s not like we don’t do the same. We build up massive amounts of wealth, buy excessive and totally impractical things, romance the town, etc.
“But Lewis let the community center fall apart!” Let’s not pretend like we hang out there either. After restoring it all of those in-game years ago, I never set foot in it again. For all I know, the Junimos have reclaimed it once again for their kinky raves.
I could go on and on, but the truth is right there: Lewis is a former player-character turned NPC, and he serves as a warning to all of the min-max’ers out there to be careful with how far you push yourself in pursuit of 100%. Because you’ll either die a hero, or you’ll live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Mr Qi owns the Skull Caverns desert property. The oasis is an iridium fort that was built just in case the Caverns overflow. Sandy’s main job is an epic level adventurer who is stationed at the fort. The store and casino are just side projects that have built up since the Caverns are still contained.

That weird feud between the dwarves and Krobus’s shadow people? Well, the mines are the ancient battleground ruins for that. The shadow people used to live down there, until the dwarves – pushed to flee their homes by modern, less and less magical society – invaded in search for shelter.
They used weapons of magical mass destruction, all sorts alchemical shenanigans. That’s what created the monsters. They’re mutated cave life, magically undead fallen warriors, and – which is why there are shadow people in the lower floors – some last straggler survivors, magically mutilated and mentally destroyed by trauma, roaming the empty stone halls of their former home.
Qi orchestrated it, btw, because he wanted the resources. The wizard (who is older than we think) was complicit in providing both sides with magical ammunition.
That’s what his wife left him over.
The magical fallout from this war is why Stardew Valley sees all these magical phenomena.
Skull cavern is just another entrance to the same have system.
