You spend most of the middle of pre hardmode just trying to get there, then you get hellstone, beat wall of flesh, and then what? Besides getting the tax collector there is little reason to visit the underworld in hard mode. Maybe adding another underworld boss or adding a new resource that spawns after the wall of flesh like chlorophyte does in the jungle? Honestly I’d take anything

Yes, I do.
The Shadow Mimic that appears in the underworld could have unique drops that.
And there could be new biomes with new enemies. At the edges of the underworld there’s the ash forest, but unfortunately it’s limited to just the edges; there could be new biomes.
Yeah also feel like granite and marble biomes should have something more interesting going on
I mean I like that in early Hard mode it is a safe space ironically since everywhere harder enemies are spawning. Until you beat a mechanical boss, then new hard mode enemies now spawn there too.
i use the underworld for a 3in1 farm. (chlorophyte/gemtree/crystal)
since its just a very large pre-dug tunnel below cavern layer.
and mostly unused space after entering hardmode.
-chlorophyte farm:
[requiring cavern layer or lower for optimal farm.
limitations of no more then 40 ore within 35 tile radius,
and less then 130 ore within 85 tile radius]
–chunks of 40 mud/ore (5×8) with 45 tile space between each chunk, made as a single row.
requiring 86+ tile space between making any additional rows.
-gemtree farm:
[requiring underground layer or lower.
planting on 2~3 block wide stone.
no backwall in the 2 tiles the sapling occupies.
and no objects in tiles the root/trunk/branches will grow to occupy:
= 16+ tile vertical space, 3 tile space between saplings, 2 tiles away from any solid walls]
–the floor between each mud/ore chunk following a pattern of ‘random block’ > 3 stone blocks > repeat,
with the sapling being planted on the center tile of each stone section.
(9 gemtrees between each mud/ore chunk)
-crystal farm:
[requiring cavern layer or lower.
limitations of no more then 3 crystals in a 6 tile radius]
–18 tile clearance above the floor (giving gemtrees the room to grow under the hallowed blocks),
single blocks of pearlstone with 9 tile space between each block.
can be placed in a grid pattern instead of only a single row.
wired with actuators to a lever for quick and easy harvest/reset.
[only ~133 pearlstone blocks per lever, more then that get despawns from the 400 dropped item limits]
somethimes i go there for the souls of night
