When a boat cross the horizon, it does so bottom to top, that is because the Earth is curved.
When a boat cross the horizon in Minecraft, it does so front to back, that is because Minecraft is flat.

The world border is there to prevent us from exploring further and thus revolve around the world!
Or, if you want to count the max teleportation distance, the world is just so immense that whenever you break the coords system you just went out of the apparently flat zone and the computer can’t render… truth

But if you dig 128 blocks down, then you can see the sun on the other side. And if you fall into the void, you suffocate in the vacuum of space.
