My biggest hope for the latest update is one that should be easy to do. I would love an update to Maru’s sprite when she’s working at the clinic. The girl deserves to be wearing scrubs.

Nurses worldwide stopped wearing the white dress-and-cap uniform starting in the 1970s, and it was entirely phased out in the 1990s. Now, the white-gown look is mostly associated with the icky “sexy nurse” stereotype. Not to mention Maru wears overalls when not at work. She’d probably enjoy scrubs way more!

I know there are mods like this one that have already done the good work. But I don’t play on PC and haven’t modified my Switch for custom content. So I’m here putting the good vibes out so that I don’t get mildly annoyed every time I go to the clinic when she’s working. Let’s give Maru scrubs!!

  1. I already sent a message to ConcernedApe with my request, but if anybody else feels similar it would help to have more people request it! 🙂

  2. I don’t mind if Maru gets scrubs instead of the cap and dress getup, but isn’t SDV set vaguely in the 80’s-90’s? I’m guessing that’s why CA used the older nurses uniform instead.

I always thought Maru looked off wearing the white nurse’s dress, but it never clicked in my brain that it’s because I was expecting her to wear scrubs instead. I fully agree with you that it’s something I think she’d personally prefer more/feel more comfortable in!

  4. I don’t think it’s so much a “fetish” thing as it is a “recognizability” thing.

It’s why cartoons often use more outdated forms of technology, like landline phones or “rabbit ear” antennae on a television. For that matter, just look at Nurse Joy from Pokémon. They all wear those more antiquated 1950s style nurse outfits to help establish visual shorthand that “this person is a nurse, she’ll restore your Pokémon’s health”.

Which is a concept I think is supported by the fact that CA had to change Maru’s nurse outfit once already because he accidentally committed a war crime by having a red cross on her hat originally. Something that again, most people associate with “medics and healing” but apparently don’t commonly know is illegal to use, even in fiction, unless you’re licensed to do so.

All that said, I’m down to have Maru wear modern nurse scrubs! The collective mental image of what nurses look like won’t move beyond the 1950s unless it becomes more common to depict nurses in modern scrubs in fiction, and that has to start somewhere, right?

CA could even include a cheeky line of throwaway dialogue about how Harvey’s clinic got a recent budget upgrade, so she finally got new uniforms that weren’t hand-me-downs from her grandma or something.

    YES PLEASE FREE MY GIRL

I love Maru, but yeah her uniform feeling like more of the sexy nurse stereotype threw me off since most of my exposure to that uniform is through the stereotype. I think scrubs would also help her and the clinic feel more realistic

  6. Well, in my country the white uniform and cap is still the standard… the way this post is redacted is kinda annoying ngl 😐
