A Brief Guide to Calculating Happiness in Terraria 1.4.5

  1. In journey mode, the angler is the only one whose happiness matters as once you research platinum coins, it's very easy to just ignore any and all price modifiers with infinite money. The angler is the only one whose happiness affects something unrelated to money

  2. The Guide is the only NPC that interacts with the happiness mechanic whose happiness does not affect gameplay in any way as he doesn't sell anything and unlike the Angler, doesn't have another mechanic that happiness can affect. Despite this, I still try my best to at least make sure he isn't unhappy.

  3. Have I always misunderstood the spacing bonus? Isn't the Optimal amount of NPCs for town 4? Two pairs of NPCs each NPC per pair 25 or less tiles from each other while having the pairs spaced out 26 or more tilse from each other. Doesn't a placement like that allow each individual NPC to perceive the max 3 others (1 within 25 tiles and 2 within 120 tiles) without effecting the bonus? If the rule is "No more than 3 OTHER NPCs withing 120 tiles" this placing SHOULD allow to keep the max spacing bonus while having pairs of 2 NPCS to ensure at least one NPC per pair is besides a loved NPC. Am I missing something?

  4. I was so confused, I was like, are they 95% happy? But they're with the love interest

Solution: Make the tax collector as happy as possible for maximum profit

  5. Im also pretty sure theres no way to actually see the angler's happiness given that they don't have a shop inventory, meaning there's no actual way to get that percentage to show up in the UI.
Personally I just headcanon it as the angler being incapable of happiness as a form of divine punishment for making me unable to be happy as well because of the fucking quest reward drop rates.

I want my fucking water and honey sponge angler. Fucking give them to me already.

  6. personally I like to have a "Main world" with every npc at max happiness with the moon lord beaten and the shimmer found bla bla bla
and for my current world have 2 of the most important npcs for my class with the goblin tinkerer in their biome so that I can get the discount and build a shoebox tower for everyone else
if I need something from say… the wizard on my ranger playthrough for some reason I can go to the "main world" and get the discount there as well as getting the shimmer stuff

  7. the biggest tip rabout happiness is that some biomes count as two biomes at the same time and that npc prioritize their favorite biome.

The underground tundra counts as an underground AND snow biome at the same time. Beacuse of this, you can actually have the goblin and mechanich in the same biome, as their favorite biome takes priority over the other

Shoutout to Khaios for this tip, he mentioned this on his video about maximizing npc layouts

  8. The display could be clear. I thought that I needed to boost it to 100% for full happiness. Then I saw 130% and my NPC wasnt happy huh? I assumed its a 0-100% scale at first..

  9. I finished watching the video and I get it now, thanks! Imo the % is a bit confusing since it represents the discount/upcharge, but it shows the happiness emoji 😅

  10. I’m curious if there is a tool which calculates the optimal arrangements for the most npc happiness (of course with a ranking system to prioritize more impactful nova like the tinkerer, over less impactful, like the guide). A mod that also incorporates modded npcs and biomes would be even better.

  11. Every time Re-Logic pushes a major update, a Quality of Life mod somewhere becomes completely obsoleted and I think that's genuinely a really good thing.
The way they implemented the meter was a little counterintuitive at first but became surprisingly easy to read surprisingly fast.

  12. A thing to note about overcrowding: penalty only checks for villagers in the smaller 25 block radius, i.e. you can have 2 houses with 3 villagers each in the same town, w/o it triggering penalties or disabling solitude bonus, just make sure houses are 25 blocks apart.

  13. just a note that the crowded multiplier applies to 2 different distances, between 0 to 25 tiles its considered solitude if there's 2 or less other npcs, between 0 and 120 tiles its considered solitude if there's 3 or less other npcs
thats why npc towns can have 4 npcs and still keep the bonus by splitting them in 2 groups
this also allows you to make a town with npcs that hate each other without a bad modifiers as npcs only care about other npcs within 25 tiles

  14. Friendly reminder that auto pause exists as an option, effectively removing the time factor of love potions! Still need to craft them, and you'll probably need to use one each buy session, but no time pressure while the shop is open.

  15. “You WILL be shoved into the same house ive been building for 20 playthoughs. You WILL be all mushed together. and you WILL die every event.” -me

  16. What does it mean to be "near" an NPC? Like the actual distance between two NPCs (which could change when they wander around during the day?) Or is it like the manhattan distance between their housing banners?

  17. im so glad you actually understand the whole 1/__% thing to make actually comparable values between numbers below and numbers above 1. Its a bit of math a lot of people seem to struggle with, and leads to bad math very often!
    and fractions in general

  18. prices be damned. the tinkerer will always be in a poo house water pit, in the jungle, the furniture cordoned off with a one block hoik, and with a singular window where he can watch the gunslinger and mechanic in their full glass house nearby 😌
