    You’re close to the snow biome. They added now backgrounds in the update.

    Becouse its night and youre technically in the snow biome.
    Its called “northern lights” i believe you might also know it as “aurora borealis” or “polar lights” or “chasma” or “aurora polaris” or simply “aurora”
    It was added to terraria in the update 1.4.5
    But its been in reality at least since 1980
