It's unplayable.
I've tried changing the resolution multiple times and it just bugs out and I have to close and re-open the game each time to see the changes. The only time when the controls look a decent size is at really low resolutions, which makes the game look awful on my laptop.
I saw posts about it, but they're from like 10 years ago. Is there a new way of handling this?

just up the UI scale, it’s in the zoom sub-menu

This has been solved by changing the UI zoom. The menu settings didn’t have it but the in-game settings did. Thanks to everyone that commented

Gotta open the UI settings when playing. I make mine a little bigger but ditch the map 😀
