Post plantera up until post cultist is its strongest stage. Not only is that when its the best class in the game, but its also its only redeeming factor.
I hope Re-Logic adds an update dedicated to pre-hardmode mage…and not secretly make it a melee update where they buff alot of melee weapons and nerf ONE already bad melee weapon.

Players when they realize that they don't need to only use weapons from a certain class and can use other weapons to improvise until they get their desired weapon
When it comes to pre boss weapons ranged and mage seem to get the short end of the stick while summoner and melee have quite a few choices that aren’t just variants with different stats (yes melee does have that sort of thing but there’s like 6 different chest loot weapons to pick from)

С этим набором ты буквально можешь пройти весь дохардмод, устроив босраш от Глаза Ктулху до Стены Плоти.

Я уж молчу про легчайших механиков и плантеру(метеоритный посох и кристальный змей, улучшение большинства аксессуаров, нормальные зелья маны и лёгкая в добыче броня) и абсолютно поломанные пост плантерные и пост големные пушки + спектральная броня, что заканчивают прохождение без шансов.
Маг очень сильный и довольно простой класс, просто он таким был есть и будет, а потому разработчикам не нужно его усилять, как несчастного воина или призывателя.
Other problem is getting enough mana. To get mana you need to collect falling stars which is quite risky at early game. My choice is melee or marksman till Eater/Brain and falling of meteorite afterwards, then space gun+meteorite set.

Mage is too easy for farm in early game, cuz you get best armor in early game for mage in underground jungle and by using stuff from underground desert is too easy to defeat evil biome boss and eye of Cthulhu
I think Mage needs to be Terrarias "meta" class and give the player more absolutely bonkers weapons that they need to learn to be extremely and I mean EXTREMELY effective. Mage has so many cool weapons but when they get cute with something like the specter staff it feels like they're deliverately misusing the class' potential; I mean its a PRE ENDGAME WEAPON and on its own ITS AN UPGRADED VERSION OF THE GEM WANDS. I think a better early game and a focus on giving Mage its own systems which help players get into a motion with the class would make it easier for beginners to keep up with. Most people who play the game for the first time will opt for a gun and maaaybe a magic weapon for debuffs; or theyll use their spell and switch to a gun when waiting for mana drops or for it to replenish.
I think it already does handle a lot of this extremely well; its probably the most fun I've ever had in a more "class focused" playthrough. You really do get rewarded for exploring every nook and cranny of the game while using every resource you have. Potion crafting helps mage the most out of any class too which is cool but I think it'd be interesting if we got some magic potions. More spell items or like two more hardmode crafting tree items would be sick. I wanna feel like a badass wizard pulling off insane magic and learning spells n shit.
It'd be cool if mage got a few more full on mage armor sets too. I think there could be potential for some sort of gem crafting armor set for early hardmode. Like a cheaper version of how the jungle armor was initially crafted. I think if Terraria were to lengthen its progression from Plantera to Moonlord, Mage qould definitely be the one aspect of the game that could shine the most.
Restricting yourself to its exclusive weapons is what makes it bad, it's pretty decent if you use other weapons if you can't find or get what you're looking for in the early game
Mage is a horrible class for like 90% of the game. You only start becoming powerful post golem and by that point you already have your final armor set. Other than that it’s worse ranger with the occasional convenient homing weapon
Mage is missing demonite/crimtane pre evil boss weapon, hellstone weapon, it could have buffs to gem stuffs and space gun and mana potions should have like 20 seconds cooldown and no damage decrease. After hardmode mage is very fun and unique, golden shower debuffs enemies with ichor, crimson mimic has weapon that attacks enemies around your mouse and increase your health regeneration, hallowed mimic and Plantera have upgraded version of vilethorn, which are unique because they hit though walls, spectre armor has 2 different set bonuses and with the hood it heals you when hitting enemy and you can switch to mask when you have full health for bigger damage and to hood when you have low HP. That's why mage class is very cool, but only after hardmode
In what way is digging to hell unviable. Just dog to hell get a scythe and your set for a decent part of the early game. Also try your luck in the dungeon entrance their is a good chance of getting the water missile or whatever it's called pre skeletor. Or just build whatever because it's early game until you get a couple of bosses killed you can't build anything anyway

Yes, and they also remove the chance of water bolt spawning near the surface dungeon area.

if ur esperate enough you can try bypssing the dungeon guardian with bees or eye of cthullu get a shdow key or get a magic missile

Early game mages are really all just luck based… Stick of Fire, Purple Ring Energy Thing, Absulute Peak Veil Thorn, And Cool Lightning Stick
