You arent crazy, I think the mod you played is called vein miner veinst. I played it and the newest version is so you cannot just use a pick lower tier than iron for vein mining.

okay i like the hunt period , it's terrifying , but it's too often , i'm sure you add that to a classic vanilla+ modpack , make the event extremely rare ( like you are not even sure to get a single one in 2 full irl days ) and oh god it's pure terror , for me raw horror need to be rare , it's boring if it's happen often , instead of atmospheric horror which need to be permanent , if the monster that hunt you is a threat , it need to be adaptative , he struggle against water the first time ? yeah sure give him frost walker effect ( while hunting you to make you drown under him ) , or depth strider , or just removing the debuff of the water , so the next time , you are gonna be scared of like why he can do that i don't remember that , hurting to lava ? fire immunity , hurt by the player ? make him disappear before a lethal hit with the effect of removing 50% of the remaining durability of anything that the player hold , armor , shield and main hand , so he could probably don't remember about the tool being that weak , immune to fall damage , and giving to the entity multiple of 1 instance spawn trigger , for example , sleeping in the bed make him spawn behind you ( maybe with some whispers if you want to add a bit of salt in your nightmare ) , going into a portal ? make him unlit the portal , but only once , it's need to be terrifying , not an annoyance , mining a tunnel can make him spawn if a hole is already existing ( like in a corner of entering a cave or smth ) , there is many ways to make a good terrifying monster horror mod ( at least for me ) , you don't need to overwhelm the player , you don't even need the chat , you don't need any messages spawning above your inventory ( but maybe it's gonna be more psychological horror and less horror mod )
