Or maybe require that you maintain targeting. Click and hold, aiming builds up an internal counter towards termination, but not aiming causes the counter to decrease. This way you need to try to maintain aim until the action completes and then the duration you need to do that depends on the mob’s difficulty. And then the chains could be the visual indicator.
