I would guess it’s a bug or something, maybe it should cost more because of the happiness mechanic but for some reason its visually bugged. So just save up a lil bit more

Restart your game and see what happens.
And I don’t mean reload your world, like close out of the game entirely.

Are you on console? If so, which one?
If you’re playing on a disc/cartridge, try removing it, shutting down the console, and then restarting the console. Otherwise, shut off the game, disconnect from wifi, power cycle the console, and try again.

Maybe try placing the coins down as decor and break them with your pick, therefore picking them back up?

Turns out no matter where my money is I can’t buy anything from anyone. Reloaded my world, restarted my console. Not sure what to do

Have you messed around with your controls at all? Maybe you unbound a button somewhere? Even if you don’t think you have changed them, I would definitely reset them to default in case you did without realizing it.
