It's one of a few dynamically adjusting settings in the game, another notable one is Fullscreen Resolution, which IS a slider.

I genuinely could not think of a better reason why it's implemented like this other than the fact it was like this since it was originally implemented.

There IS a hidden key combo that can be used to adjust it in the menu without even thinking about the button (CTRL + MouseWheel), but you are not told about it anywhere in the game. This is NINTENDO levels of UI accessibility.

  1. Because the GUI size changes as you adjust the GUI Scale, so a slider would move away from your mouse and be frustrating to use.

  2. back when minecraft first came out there wasnt a slider for any setting NOT EVEN FUCKING RENDER DISTANCE! YOU EITHER HAD TO CLICK IT ALOT OR PRESS F (Offhand didnt exist until 1.8 or something)

I suppose this setting never got updated since beta and therfore is still a button rather then a slider compared to fullscreen which was added just a few years back

I might be misremembering but I think it used to be one too. Maybe I’m thinking of something else. If you use Sodium, it changes the visual settings menu and makes the gui scale a slider, it also has an apply button.

I don’t understand why you’d want a slider for 5 options though, in this case a button cycle seems better suited

  5. What would also be crazy if it didn’t immediately change the gui scale when you click it.
