Practically speaking, this is just a different implementation of what Compact Machines does.
It is rather neat and a bit more… interesting, I suppose. Would make for some neat compact redstone builds.

If you place down multiple instances of the same black box do you end up with several independent structures? Or do the boxes always refer to the same original structure?
