There’s this conman; he calls himself the “Goblin Tinkerer.”
Ignore him.

I’ll go against the grain. For your first playthrough avoid the wiki and Google. Talk to the guide npc if you’re stuck. Love the exploration and grind. At its core that’s what terraria is, but using the wiki can make it feel like a linear boss rush. It’s not that fun to play that way for most people.

Only use the guide if you’re truly lost.
Also the controls make take some getting used to, it was designed for pc and thusly sucks on controller.

~~Something special happens if you place 100 torchs all in one area underground…~~ Never mind, you’re playing old gen.
Also, ores work in tiers, Copper=Tin<Iron=Lead<Silver=Tungsten<Gold=Platinum. Note that each world only has one of each.
Also, if you see a weird spikey/eyeball thing underground that glows, that’s an altar.

If anything says ‘Material’ it can be used to craft something. The guide has a Crafting speech option you can check any item and see what crafting recipes it’s used for.
Build houses and use the house icon to check if the house is suitable. Get a grappling hook, learn to grapple often and well.
Check the skies if you see a puddle.
Have fun!!!

You’re gonna die to some real bullshit, just roll with it. Progression is very non-linear, don’t be afraid to dig deep right away. Armor is invaluable, look for trinkets that give armor and upgrade when you can. Use potions and food for bosses and dangerous exploration.

The guide is extremely useful (try to avoid googling ad much as possible) and their is a little achivement guide when you open your inventory that nudges you in the direction of what you should do next, extremely reliable early game

Just starting off? I’d recommend exploring the surface as much as possible, and if you find any structures they’ll contain some good loot for ya, especially the big brick building, thats the dungeon and it contains really good loot for a beginner!

Look up info on the corruption/crimson and it’s spread so you know what ur getting into. I jumped in not knowing and I lost most of my desert due to biome spread until I eventually learned (o was only able to save a sliver lol). It’s not difficult to deal with but knowing beforehand is key in my opinion.

the guide is your best friend
if you dont want to use a wiki you can get any information from the guide
need next steps? the guide might tell you something
new material or item listed as material? he will know what its used for
build him a house and keep him safe first thing after you spawn because without him you will be lost

Use the guide. He’ll tell you what you need to know for progression and what the items you pick up can be used to craft

Talk to the guide. He might not make sense at first, but what he says will be crucial to knowing what’s going on and what you should do.

Having the correct torch in a biome will increase your luck stat, but if there are wrong torches nearby it cancels out that luck.
You can make your torches automatically change to the right biome variant for free, by consuming a drop from a special Underground Layer boss.
To summon him, you must place 101 Torches in close proximity in the Underground Layer.
The boss deals % damage of your max health, so extra health doesn’t matter… but damage reduction and mobility *do* help.

Talk to the guide and ask him about stuff. You can show em the materials you find and he’ll tell you about em

Whenever looking for a specific item, make sure to NOT think of that item. If you do, Terraria’s brain-scanning feature will detect what item you are searching for and make it 23x rarer than it has any right to be.
