as I’ve seen from another account that uses an automated API, the free availability got yoinked or something and you have to pay an absurd amount of money to get access again

Around a week or two ago, the free twitter bot API was quietly reworked so instead of having a free limited tier and paying for more posts and usage, you now pay per post without any free options so many bots immediately stopped working and even some people went in the negatives because it wasnt announced at all
