This should at least require 9x the smelting time, perhaps even more, because it’s bigger chunk. You gonna lose some heat while trying to heat it up all the way to the center of the chunk. Want the convenience of smelting to a block? The drawback is higher fuel usage. I like it.

Minecraft currently does not have a single furnace recipe that lasts longer than the others. I doubt they would do this.

This is exactly the problem: every item has the exact same smelting time, so smelting raw ore blocks would either be illogical as it’d suddenly be 9 times more fuel-efficient for no reason, or Mojang would have to redo the entire smelting system, and there are better things to do than fixing what’s not broken.
