Why bother with the world saves? 13 years the world gen has changed a lot.

Well, I’ve bought it now, so let’s see. I’ll start afresh as was recommended, and then later try to old saves to see if there work and maybe I can walk paths I haven’t walked for 13 years, if possible.
Thanks, all.

They absolutely should work, since they use the same system. It can come with some issues due to world and player limitations back in the day, but probably not. You should absolutely do a new playthru tho and keep the old one for memories
Eta: Wait, 13 years ago it already was 1.2 fuck I feel old now, they should work without issues then but will still miss most new content

Since nobody actually answered the fucking question in this handful of comments, yes old player and world saves from any version of Terraria can carry over into the newest version without issue, unless the files got corrupted or were modded in some way.

Nobody seems to actually be answering your question, now I don’t know for certain but the files in the latest version of the game look the exact same, so I don’t see why these wouldn’t work.
Like many others have said, these worlds won’t have any of the world generation features that have been added to the game since these worlds were first created, but you should still be able to visit them for nostalgia’s sake.

They should work, however if you do play again I highly recommend first playing on a new world. There is sooooo much more content and a massively reworked progression now compared to 1.1 (or 1.2), it will feel like a very different, improved in every way but familiar game.
After you play through the game again only then would I say to load up the old world (make sure to keep the backup) so you can see it again in a new context and not be confused by any changes.

2013 vs 2026 is like a completely new game, heavily suggested to start fresh

They will almost certainly load, but as others have pointed out already, you wouldn’t really want to do a playthrough on them now anyway, as they’d be missing all new world generation features added since, such as the shimmer and possibly even the jungle temple if it’s from before 1.2.

Someone would probably buy those save files for a hefty amount

You’re most definitely going to want to just start fresh. Your old worlds won’t have new worldgen features.
Even if they did they wouldn’t have a ton of things added since then. So you’re better off making a new world instead.
